I have acquired some material called 'Nautolex' which I intend to line a wet-locker and heads bulkhead with. It has a smooth, almost fabric rear surface which I need to glue to smooth wood. Apart from the pleasure of cutting to size I am not sure what glue I should use?
Contact glue is asking for trouble, although prob the best way to go. Is there a glue that 'moves' until set, similar to the idea of wallpapering?
Dont really fancy carpet fixing spray as it is messy, noxious and again 'instant grab' and I doubt it lasts too long?
I dont see much glue in local builders supplies except 'contact' these days. Any experience or ideas?

A water resistant PVA wood glue is the way with foam backed vinyl onto wooden panels.

If your material has fabric backing then Id expect to work on that too. Certainly worth a small trial..

Otherwise ask the manufacturers or suppliers what glue is recommended. ... A water based vinyl flooring adhesive the website says!

About 30 years ago I used a product called Thixofix which was Toluene based. It was easy to use and you could move bits around as it did not "grab instantly" Did exactly was it said on the tin BUT, I ended up in hospital with liver failure brought on by solvent fumes in a confined space, 3 months off work, lost 2 stone, turned bright yellow and could not drink alcohol for about three years. All of this due to the toluene and my stupidity thinking the open door to the aft cabin would give sufficient ventilation.

There is a new version of Thixofix out which is claimed to be Toluene free but it is still very nasty so take care with your choice.

It's been recommended on here before that wallpaper paste works well with non foam backed vinyl. I haven't tried it yet but it's on my to-do list.

Am I right in thinking the PVA glue referred to isn't a variation of that readily available from builders merchants but something different?
I thought that was what someone said in the thread below but appear to be imagining it, unless it was another thread, it certainly did not work for me.

I have good success with Copydex but it is expensive. Cc £17 per litre and I failed to find a cheaper equivalent.

Just as an update. I used a flooring vinyl adhesive to 'paste' headlining to wet locker and heads plywood walls. As there was still the remnants of the horrible black foam backing left I painted this with PVA the day before. All worked fine. No smell/fumes, no 'instant' contact grab. Left for 10 minutes to harden a little and then offered it up like wallpaper to three very odd shaped sections. Can be pulled away and repositioned without problem. Painted adhesive onto larger bulkhead, other bits onto back of vinyl with serated spreader. The vinyl I used is textured so any existing roughness does not show through. Used just over 1/2 litre for approx 2 sq metres of material. Result!
These people seem to have a good range of interesting adhesives, if you're into that sort of thing!

That looks good. Suitable for use with underfloor heating so should be good for hot climates. Spec sheet says marine use too.

Bookmarked. Thanks.

We have just relined our cabin with excellent results. We used Hawke House materials and glues and importantly, followed their instructions and guidance to the letter. My view would be to talk to them (they are extremely helpful and know their stuff) and do exactly what they say, with the glues and products they recommend. You really don't want headlining down around your ears with wet glue on it or at any time in the future!

This is the Toluene free stuff:http://www.alphaadhesives.co.uk/Products/Solvent-Based-Adhesives/ALPHA00001.aspx

jb thanks for that and I appreciate Hawke House are the specialists in the headlining field. However mine was a different situation. Sticking vinyl vertically to locker/bulkhead. Not foam backed, not horizontal.
In my situation I was feared of contact glue (which I use in my work) 'grabbing' the material, thus causing further mental breakdown.
Looks like research and discussion can come up with good results!!
