Having arrived in Madeira a week ago I offer the following information:
Porto Santo, is a small marina or should I say set of pontoons in the corner of a commercial harbour. It has no security but I dont think its needed as the people are so friendly and they take pride in their tourism industry. Very friendly staff and Customs (GNR) were an absolute pleasure to deal with, for anyone visiting in over 13m there are limited spaces on the reception wall and on the end of the finger pontoons. Beware of the middle of the end pontoons where the 2 fingers join the walkway as there are protrusions that will catch the unwary The fingers are fairly short and more suited to 10 - 12m max. Nice showers and a small bar with a short 10min walk into a lovely town.....Mrs JC walks fast! Charges with the discount for CA members were Euro 25 for 13m x 4m.
Quinto Do Lorde: On the face of it it looks ideal, you get a 30% discount for CA members which reduces the cost for 13m x 4m to Euro 43 p/n inc water/elect and wifi. They are also very accommodating nd there is a regular bus service to Funchal. They also have a big hangar where you can lay out and repair sails if you wish but watch out for the local sail repair chap who is extortionate and rather amateur from the work I have seen him do on other boats in the time we have been here.I say ideal because the surge in the marina is terrible, even in calm weather most yachts are rearing around like mad horses and the amount of chafe protection required is considerable. We also looked at Funchal where there is less chafe but still uncomfortable for a good nights sleep.
Madeira is an amazing place such geographical contrast but I would caution about a lengthy stay here as the continuous 24hr surge puts a lot of strain on the yachts cleats, fairleads and wharps.
