Additives...yes or no?

I'm not one for using them generally as I regard them as snake oils, however I have heard a couple of good reports on this one. Has anyone got anything to say about it?
Apart from how expensive it is!

Normally would agree with you Alex, but I've actually met a couple of people that have recommended this stuff (and they weren't wearing sandwich boards advertising it) and I can't find that many who disagree about this in particular.
Don't need it myself at the moment (thank god as its a tad pricey) but its intrigued me a bit.

Maybe our own 'test' would need to be done, using a knackered old outboard, generator or some other small engine as a candidate.

Im not convinced myself, but it would be interesting to try it on something.
 
In its effect it sounds like the stuff we used to use in cars in the 60's when engine's wore out rather more quickly. It would temporarily improve the piston to cylinder seal and reduce smoking, improve oil pressure a bit and cut down the noise from the worn big end bearings.

Anyhow, the idea with that stuff was you put it in to reduce the smoke then flogged the car to someone else before the effects wore off. Not that I did anything like that you understand . .

What length of time do these guys guarantee the effects of their cure all elixir for ?

ref: Volvo Diesel Marine engine - Hi Dave. Last year i put a 250 ml can of engine restore in my Volvo Diesel Marine engine and it brought it back from the dead and lasted a further year. what was that rubbish that they reckoned they drained the sump of a car ... poured a canm of xxxxx in ... drove it round a race track for xxx ,000 miles ?

Didn't that get the right royal right boot eventually ? Maybe someones found the recipe and re-named it ?
 
Hi sbc - that's not fair - you're tarring everyone with the same brush. Restore is an engine re-metalizer (what you are talking about was a tv stunt by a multilevel marketing group in the USA using a chlorinated hydrocarbon, and i agree a teaspoonful of bleach from under the sink will do the same, and yes the Courts said it was a trick). However Ametech Restore is a real re-metalizer - works in engines and manual gearboxes and standard differentials.
