My two 2-blade Flex-O-Folds arrived today as mentioned in the other recent threads. These are for twin Yanmar SD20 saildrives with 3YM30 engines.

The first thing that struck me when I opened the outer packaging from Darglow was the set of assembly instructions for the 3-blade Flex-O-Folds. My first thought was that they've sent me the wrong instructions (not good) ..... my second thought was that they've sent me the wrong prop (very good).

However, when I opened the box containing the props, I began to see the light, I think.

I might be wrong, but this was not the design I was expecting. I was sure that the end conical anode and the enclosed gearbox were features of the 3-blade rather than the 2-blade. If so, it looks as if the design of the 2B has been changed but they haven't yet got around to writing the new assembly instructions.

I don't know whether this design change is a good or bad thing, but it's certainly the case that I can now fill the gearbox with waterproof grease, as is my usual practice, and with the end cover on it should stay in place for a long time.

One other thing I had not realised is that these props are so heavy. Each one is 9kg whereas the alloy Radice's they are replacing are probably around 1 kg. Now, I'm not a physicist but, as long as the props are well balanced there must surely be a signifiicant flywheel / momentum effect from having this extra weight spinning around on the end of the propshaft. If so, perhaps I can look forward to an even smoother motoring experience than I currently enjoy. :) (although, if so, why have I never read about this advantage before?)

You will certainly find it a noisier experience when going from forward to astern when manoeuvring.

Not my experience at all. No different from a fixed prop, except perhaps a small delay, but one gets used to that very quickly.

No loud clunk when the blades open?

No. Had the prop on two boats for 5 years and never heard any sound when engaging gear, either forward or revers. Not to say that some folding props are not noisy, but smooth operation is one of the selling features of a FlexoFold.

You can see those large acetal shock-absorbers in the final photo. I guess that their purpose is to deaden the clunk .... and it sounds as if they do the job. Hopefully. :)

I don't recall my old blades or the replacement ones delivered the other week weighing anything like 9kg each!

My SD50 came with a 3 blade fixed aluminium prop. It weighs almost nothing. By contrast the flex-o-fold weighs a ton but is said to be approved for fitment by Yanmar because it has the nylon (?) isolating bush within the boss.

Mine is now three season old and I've been delighted with its performance.

I've always had a niggling doubt about swinging this weight through the gearbox but it just adds to my general dislike of the saildrive (cone clutch reputation, sea water tap reputation, flimsy moisture detector which I was told to remove and check each year and my biggest gripe the ridiculous 5 year hull seal change recommendation).

No clonk or knock at all.

It's funny, I've read somewhere about the redesign but can't find any trace of it. Odd that they haven't changed the website yet.

Have been using mine since August this year, very smooth operation and I cant say I have noticed any delay in changing in either direction.
