Adding water to the meths in an Origo stove

Anybody know if I can just add a 100ml or so of water to the litre of 'meths' that is already in my Origo stove? I've recently refilled with 'alcool a bruler' and this batch is causing the watery eye syndrome that some others report. The older stuff I had never caused a problem. I imagine best practice is to mix the water with the meths before topping up - but it's a bit late for that now.

alcohol absorbs water and is often poured into outboard engines that have been dunked in freshwater to dry the engine out (although it should be re-built too).

So I think what you suggest is ok.

Can you perform a test on a 'small bit' first?

Not sure how it will affect the burning affect of the stove.

Someone will be along to give a more qualified answer hopefully.

Be safe and good luck.

You can dilute it with 10% water before filling - works well and kinder on the eyes! If you have already filled it with neat meths, maybe leave it to burn and leave the hatch open if it is too much for you and then refill.:)

Reluctant to wait until all the existing meths has been used as that will take quite a while - and now the evenings are cooler it would be nice to not have to have fore and main hatches wide open just to make a cup of tea. I like the phrase 'alcohol absorbs water' so I'll give it a try. If it doesn't work then there is still the other burner and a winter coming to sort it all out.

I've not tried any bio ethanol yet - hadn't needed to until now - but if the dilution method doesn't work then I probably will. Good thing all the alcool a bruler I stocked up on was so cheap.

10% water does indeed work well with Alcool a bruler, and Bioethanol works even better without any dilution! As an aside, I was in sailing the Outer Hebrides this year, and couldn't locate any Bio Ethanol; it was unheard of, whereas on the mainland, Inverness, it's available in multiple outlets. That struck me as strange?

I don't think it will mix well if it's already in the burner as it soaks into wadding but yes a 10% mix was what I used to use before I had gas on my last boat
