Adding full length battens

Has anybody had full length battens fitted to mainsail built with normal battens? The sailmaker I tried seemed very reluctant because of the trouble getting it through a sewing machine but it must be possible otherwise some sail repairs would be impossible.

Possible, but full length battens need more consideration - one is they are set against the mast so need, for instance, to be fitted with special slides on end. I see no problem with sewing, but no idea what the sailmaker had in mind. Depends on his equipment. Personally I would not bother with modifying a sail. There must be a reason for those battens, and it's better to have sail made for them, cost wise.

I had flb's retro fitted to my main.
No special sliders, just ordenar
y ones added at the end of each pocket.
Well worth doing, it makes quite a difference to the set of the sail.
