Hi all,

Next possible project is looking at adding a gyro to our Raymarine S3 course computer to enhance the course keeping abilities (which will be a whole lot cheaper than buying a new system).

So, will adding a gyro make a noticeable difference?

I know you can buy aftermarket add on gyros for about 200 GBP from ebay, but how hard would it be to make one up myself (I have read that finding the right gyro is now difficult as new ones are all digital and the one for the S3 has to be analogue)?

Cheers

Adding a gyro to our S2 made a noticeable improvement on holding a steady heading and crisper course changes. It steadied instantly on a new heading rather than overshooting then slowly correcting. I picked up a Raymarine E12102 Gyro Rate Plus 2 Pathfinder Smart Heading System cheap on eBay and robbed the gyro. It was a very simple to fit into the S2 unit just 2 machine screws and a plug.
I don't think it's a case of analogue v digital but nmea 0183 v nmea 2000.

Autonnic.com do a gyro compass for around £170. I'm wondering whether to get one for my raymarine pilot to see whether it would reduce the motor working, as the montion seems to upset the supplied compass to the smart pilot.

Hello I wonder if I could take you back to the above? I'm treading the same path. I have an E12102 open in front of me. Is the module you transfered, the simple Kionix with a ferrite and 3 wire plug? Did it just find it and become able to auto in the sea setup?
