Hi there, My partner and I have just purchased a 1943 Brixham Trawler convirted to live aboard that will still cruise. We dont want to stay static and are wondering how various regulations will affect us travelling with our 4 dogs. We have details about pet passports but wonder if other regulation apply if we moor in foreign parts and want to walk our dogs? Anyone out there with any advice for us please? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Try a search of previous postings

If you do a search on 'dogs abroad' and set the date to newer than 50 weeks you'll get a whole load of info from previous queries. I'm no expert but the gsit seems to be that you don't much to take to dog abroad it's getting it back into the UK that might be a prob. Look at the search results tho' there's lots of good info.

Re: Try a search of previous postings

We are just completing the process.
You can take your pets out of the UK with no problem on any vessel.
However, you cannot bring them back in unless they have a valid pet passport.
This requires one (or two, depending on your vet) anti-rabies injections costing around £50. Note that some vets will not issue a passport to a dog over ten years old.
You must also have your dog chipped with an ID chip.
One month after the last injection, a blood test must be taken to see if the injections have worked £130.
If OK, a passport is issued valid for one year. Renewal is fairly cheap £35 ish, but must be done within the year. ONE DAY LATE and you have to start again.
You cannot bring your dog back into the UK within 6 months of the test proving positive.
You must also have your dog wormed 24 hours before entering the UK AND you can only bring him/her back on an approved carrier.
This means either by air or by ferry and nearly all ferries demand you keep the dog in a car during the crossing.
I believe both Hoverspeed and Condor are the only exceptions.
One possinble rout is via Jersey or Gurnsey. It is only a short trip from the French maninland and we planned for my wife to bring the dog by Condor ferry from France to Jersey and I would take the boat alone. We could then bring the dog back to the UK legitimately on the boat.
Hope this helps.

Re: Try a search of previous postings

Certainly helps as far as the dog chips etc. , mind if I ask what boat you have , not heard from valgal and was interested in trawler too, don't suppose you have one. Also, what if you don't know how old your dog is, ours was rescue

We have an 11m Solaris Sunrise cruising catamaran - we much prefer sail to power.
We will be taking her down the French canals to the med for 6 months next year. Our dog was a rescue dog, but we got him as a pup. He is now 12, but still active enough to come with us.
