Hi,
As I'm planning a weekend being a contorsionist (spelin?) in the engine bay of my latest purchase I was hoping that a knowledgable member could advise on the type of antifreeze I should be using on my pair of ad41b's of 1991 vintage?
Also can the normal car stuff from Halfrauds be used?
Many thanks
Rob

If you get yourself down your local Volvo truck & bus depot and bring a big container with you they will decant you a container load of that nice greeny stuff you are after and loads cheaper that from any boaty place. I think last time I went it was £1/litre (but that was a couple of years back) and then dilute 50/50 with water

Last time I bought from Volvo truck cente 5 Litres coolant concentrate Volvo part No 1089238 £13.41 so probably £15 now

Thanks RIN great info for future ref..........

As I only have my local motor factors to use in the morning can anyone suggest an equiv please?

I just use whatever available fro my local factor.Think it says "Comma" or summat they sell it in 25l or 5l.

AFAIK there are two types of commonly available coolant- a 3 year one and a 5 year one. They are both different colours one is pink one is green, they can be mixed but you will only get the benefit of 3 year corrosion protection. I personally use the 5 year one but I don't think that antifreeze type is terribly critical to any engine.

The question I gotta ask is....
Is it vital to use the Volvo stuff, or will any green (5 yr) antifreeze do?

I read somewhere before that Volvo stuff has special ingredients that if not used could cause engine overheating - To say I was sceptical was an understatment, but to this date i've had no one say for certain that it's all the same stuff!

Been using non-volvo stuff in our KAD42's - no overheating /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ] There appears to be no recommendation on the type of antifreeze to use in the owners manual (which can be found at http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/global/e...ion_engines.htm )

I dont think you can be guided by colour because as far as I know there is no standard between manufacturers.

There are a variety of different corrosion inhibitor systems in use which should not be inter mixed. Therefore in this instance I think the choice of antifreeze is purely the owners but what ever that is it should not be mixed with other brands or even other antifreezes from the same manufacturer.

I always used Comma A/F in the TAMD 41s in our previous boat. What was good enough for our local haulage firm running a mixed fleet including Volvo trucks was good enough for me!
