Ran my boat around to my home marina at Burry Port from Swansea today (first trip in my recent purchase)...
However on inspecting the engine bay after a safe but quite rough passage (no pics soz forgot camera) I could see and smell diesel in the bilges, a quick poke around and I discovered that the bleed nut on top of the filter on port engine was loose and the area was soaking in diesel!
Tried to tighten by hand but it seems that the thread has been stripped in the filter casting as it will not "nip up" !!!! (bugger)(waiting for the "engineer" who carried out the full service last week to call me back.
Would I be able to apply some PTFE tape to ensure a good seal or would the panel reccomend I change the casting for new?
Thanks
Rob

I would not use PTFE tape other than as a temporary bodge. A "get you home" measure.

Wiggo's suggestion may be possible or it may not depending on the design. I reckon luck will be on your side if it is.

Bleed screws are ususally hollow vented things and tighten onto a sealing washer or onto a conical metall to metal seat.

Thanks guys
Screw has a slit up the side to about 3/4 way up to allow any air to pass when unscrewed a few turns, and it seats against a copper washer....
Need to remove the filter casting and assess if suitable to go up a tap size I guess.
Was just hoping that a little PTFE would be enough to allow the threads to bite.

Previous answers already covered what I would have said - ptfe is only a temporary measure as it gets eaten by diesel- drill and tap or replace the filter head.
