Hi has anybody got any experiance of the shutters (smoke limiters)in the ad31 exhaust elbow. Im looking for an overhaul kit as mine are shot and need repair any help would be appreciated thanks Gerry.

If they are the same as the 41's

I had great success with mine.
The fuse on the top is continental type and the aluminium corrodes, a change of fuse can be a quick cheap fix a problem.

The solenoids break and are expensive but Scania trucks make them that fit and are a little cheaper.

New VP kits come with a bypass to the continental fuse but I found the new bypass kit less effective and went back to the old circuit with a new fuse.

BUT
some say that even with the solenoid working the flaps corrode and have little effect on smoke, so before you waste much time ask someone to look outside as you manually hold the flaps closed to see if it makes any difference.

Not sure about overhaul kits but what I can say is whenever work has been done on the system it is very important to adjust them so that the solonoid moves it's full travel. If it stops short then it will burn out the coil in the solonoid!

Just done top end overhaul on a pair of 41as, 1 out of the 2 limiters were not working, as one is now you can clearly see how good they work.

The flap kit is NLA you have to buy the whole elbow, just told today by RK marine.

Make sure the flap spindle is free to turn, dont adjust it wrong as it will burn the pull coil out, if the rod extends as there is a spring inside then adjust to on the threads to close the gap.

I found mine were non-existant. So, I made new ones out of stainless and bolted into the spindles. Seem fine after a few years. I was of the understanding that they arrest raw water getting up the exhaust which, if true, is more important than reducing smoke.

might try fabricating new ones as there no longer available they were only to control emission levels on cold starts. PS where abouts in scotland are you? im at kip regard gerry
