Action camera, what should I be looking at?

No idea about these things, but would like to fit a camera to stern looking forward. I have wifi on board, and don't want to be playing about with cards and, if possible, battery charging - is there one where you can provide external power? Also, not sure of what field of vision needed. And, finally, can you get one where an external mike can be used.

Don't say GoPro - I'm too tight.

I bought a JVC Adyxxion earlier this year. Works without a case to 5m depth so great for snorkelling, has Wifi,1080P, and is about half the price of a Go Pro.

The App can provide remote control and viewing from an Ipad.

A Handle bar mount is about £10 from Ebay.

The camera has standard screw mount holes on the base and side, and comes with a clip to attach to a dive mask strap.

Doesn't have a remote mike though.

Upsides appear to be lower cost than a Go Pro and WiFi uploading of your videos, but downside is that the 170 degree fish eye lens gives a distorted view. I wish they were made with a narrower angle lens (say 120 degrees) and little or no distortion.

I've just bought an SJCAM400 after reading loads of reviews for just that purpose. A brief play before Santa wraps it up suggests it's good. Bought mine from Amazon, slightly cheaper than ebay and you can get a little bit of fundraising done if you follow a charity/club etc link

CHARGING TIME: About 3.5 hours

Not really what I am after - something to hang up and forget about until I want it switched on. What about a security camera? Do they produce better than grainy shots unusable as evidence?

Amazon looks just as bad as E-bay on this. There are a lot of obvious SJCAM fakes for around £40, then there are the branded QUMOX ones at similar prices to the SJCAM branded ones, and some sellers advertising with pictures of the genuine SJCAM one and selling fakes at the full price, like this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/SJCAM-SJ400..._sbs_ph_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=1QA1BKCWKDA6BQ5B3VPM
The question is where to buy a genuine one.

There is an SJCAM 5000 wifi which I think uses the same chip (?) as the Gopro. Release seems a bit delayed due to some firmware issue, but if you aren't in a hurry it might be worth waiting a few weeks and see some reviews. I think the prices will be £125-135 level to start with. The 4000 should be about £70 and MUST have SJCAM on it (there are alot of look alikes which are not so good).

Security cameras specify TVL. The higher the TVL number (900 and above) the better the resolution. They are 12V powered usually.

You would of course have to connect it to a monitoring station / hard drive. Many can be linked to router so you can see what the camera sees (motion activated) via your smart 'phone even if you are many miles away from the camera.
