Hi Guys,

While trawling the net I came across this little gem …

"Acetone drastically reduces the surface tension. Most fuel molecules are sluggish with respect to their natural frequency. Acetone has an inherent molecular vibration that "stirs up" the fuel molecules, to break the surface tension. This results in a more complete vaporization with other factors remaining the same. More complete vaporization means less wasted fuel, hence the increased gas mileage from the increased thermal efficiency. "

I'm just off to Birdham Stores to buy a gallon or two! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would be really careful with that stuff, make sure that all you hoses and seals in the fuel lines will not be softened or destroyed. Acetone is as you know a great solvent and as such will also break down the thin film of oil used in most engines for upper cylinder lubrication possibly causing increased friction, heat and wear. you may also find that it plays havoc with your water separating filters.

Engine manufactures spend millions of pounds developing their products to run effieciently on normal fuels, stick with them and only use approved products or else you could be in for some big bills IMHO

Sounds a right load of cobblers to me. Goodness know what natural frequency they're talking about. Hydrocarbon molecules do have a magnetic resonance frequency, that's why MRI scanners work, but doubt that acetone and fuel performance is relevant.

Sounds like the claims are directed towards petrol engines, they talk about gas mileage. Wouldn't put it in diesel, likely to more harm than good. Quite aggressive stuff acetone, as others say, will mess up grp, and possilby seals and hoses.

I have a sneeky suspicion that the article may have been produced somewhere several thousand miles west of the UK if you get my drift /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Just something to remember, Don't always believe what you read on the net, some people still publish papers claiming that the earth is flat!!!

I think you may find that the potential to add acetone as an oxygenator additive has been considered and discarded as a petrol additive in favour of MTBE an ether.

I led part of the investigative programme to make this descision 10 -12 years ago

If anyone can get a supply of Acetone from a "retail" source and in 5 litre type quantities - then do let me know... (I suspect it's impossible to get nowadays). I can't even get IPA (of either sort) to clean plastic etc except in tiny bottles at an astronomic price - and then you have to sign your life away.
