Reading the burgee address brings back memories of Accrington. Grandparents had corner shop Brown Street (1957-60 ish) near to the Station. Sunday School march through Accrington moved to Hapton, Padiham Road and then to Colne Brown Street West, Luton Leagreave Road, back to Colne and then to North Wales, Birmingham and now the East coast.

Started life in Chorley, worked in Blackburn (up t'Rovers) for GPO (now BT) so Accy, Colne etc brew shops are all well known.
Next stop Clapham (daan saaf) in a grotty lodging house - one room shared between 3 blokes I didn't know. This will explain the otherwise inexplicable attraction of my next stop which was-
Luton, not Leagrave Rd although I know it well - just off Toddington Road.
Now in Newbury and hence striking distance of the Solent.

Just so happens I was in 'Acky last weekend for a wedding. The evening do was in the 'Canine Club'. The most remakable thing about Acky is that the big night out is Sunday night. Apparently they're queuing to get into the clubs. Friday and Saturday nights are quiet in comparison. Weird but true and with no apparent reasoning (except maybe they're all unemployed?).

Still for what we pay for a house in Cheltenham you could but one of those pro footballer's houses up north.

to get to the boat....yorkshire, greater manchester, cheshire, flintshire, clwyd, gwynedd ( i think ) ..anyway its not too bad, 2 1/2 hours on a good day, 3 1/2 on a bad one. Need to watch out for all those speed traps in the villages that are about 400 yards long.

Re: Dvorak - Dvoøák

IMHO, you are both right - its Dvorák with a little v over the r, except that ybw fonts don't support Czech and turns it into a ø - how confusing is that? :)

If Haydn gets all these orders out he will be better than Dvorak at orchestration.

Keith

In light of the extraordinary interest in Accrington exhibited by readers of this forum, I just knew everyone would be keen to see the following extract from t'Rovers web site:

Rovers neighbours bid to upstage Burnley

Rovers' neighbours Accrington Stanley have put in an audacious bid to outdo Burnley in the ageing glamour signing stakes.

Stanley took a step back into the limelight yesterday when they tried to tempt David Ginola to the Crown Ground on loan until the end of the season.

Despite his current lack of first-team action, however, Ginola has chosen not to follow fellow Everton reserve Paul Gascoigne to East Lancashire.

Everton, too, immediately rejected the approach, leaving the side fourth in the Unibond Premier Division still searching for a saviour as they seek to overhaul a 20-point gap between them and first-placed Burton Albion.

The Guardian today reported that the French winger's response to the approach presumably differed little from the script of the ad: "Accrington Stanley? Who are they?" The answer - a club with a seated capacity of 700 who play behind a pub near the M65 - clearly did not impress. "David will remain with us until the end of the season," confirmed an Everton spokesman.

Now when Ginola settles down to watch his country take on Scotland tomorrow night, he will know that he could have been playing against Gainsborough Trinity instead. He probably feels he is worth considerably more than that.
