We took my Shetland off the water today at Wells Harbour my mate said he would tow her back to Stamford for me .We got her off the water very smoothly indeed then proceeded to Stamford. We got as far as Wisbech ok and negoiated the Guyhurn rounderbout,i noticed 20yards afterwards (me followinging behind )that one of the trailer wheels looked decidedly at an angle(4wheeled trailer),my son and i were just about to flash Pete that we had a problem when the wheel buckled and jamed up into the mudguard;this caused the trailer to pull the tow car down until it bottomed out ,then worst of all the ballhitch detached itself from the car ...sparks everyware the trailer nuges(luckily on his tow hitch) my mates car he moves to the center of the road...THE BOAT AND TRAILER OVERTAKES HIM ON THE INSIDE!!!!,it then proceeds down the slight hill gathering momentum as it goes scraping along the kurb ,this with oncoming traffic coming the other way..it then mounts the kurb and ....yes youve,e guessed hits a traffic sigh and then even worse a bloody great steet light post....my son took a cleat with a portion of left hand boat home with him as a memento....moral....if you dont know the condition of your trailer bearings change them anyway...the hub in question was tight at start of journey....60miles and was packed with fresh grease.Thank god the boat hit highway furniture and not another car or personsons....the insurance rangle starts Monday

Re: you poor sod

Trailer was made for boat so no nicking ,its only a 18fter on a 3ton trailer the whole thing only weighs 735 kg,new boats 23ft approx 9ft beamt beam an hasn,t got trailer at moment was moved on a six wheeler.Trailer lookes ok but boat has a 2.5ft hole in its port side and the front bar thingy(can,t remember the name as feel like s***t)is totaled ,the force of the impact cracked the tender which was lashed to the shetland and the fuel tank in the back was capapulted through the door and hit the cabin door spliting the tank, the extra tank which was in the cabin was also capapulted and was dented the fire extinguisher was picked up from the road having exited through the hole in the hull/deck,funny enough the boat ended up 5inches futher back on the trailer from when it started, now dought the interigty of boat/hull....that single malt helps the recovery truck cost 240incl!!!!.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck. I was surprised that the brake safety cable did not put the brakes on and hold them locked on the trailor as this is exactly the situation the cable is meant to operate. If you look at the downside of what could have happened, either you, your son or mate could have been injured or other people could have got hurt then the fact that boat and trailor were damaged becomes pretty insignificant. I know it is easy for me to say that as it did not happen to me but that is how I would think. Good luck with your insurance company.

Re: you poor sod

Good news about the rod !!
Some bloke was catching sea bass two weeks ago just slightly up the creek from your boat .
I still have to get my exhaust sorted but cant find what I want yet so fishing is on hold.
Cheers

bet the safety cable was attached to the ball hitch on the car...which became detached from the car and therefore unable to do that job. Ultimately that seems to have been the failure that caused a 'normal' bearing failure related incident / tyre blowout type incident to go very pear shaped

Yea, but you can only prosecute the driver of said vehicle.... and there ain't one!

sorry to hear about the boat, good luck with the repairs.

The silence from Trev on this seems to indicate that maybe they'd NOT got a safety cable on?

Bad luck though with the accident. Had a simlar one years ago. Ski boat on trailer going down to Cornwall. Mate who was new to driving with a trailer got a bit blase and was going a bit quick down hill. Tried to brake and boat flew off trailer, think he (we?) must have forgotten to tie it down too. Interesting though when a boat overtakes on in the inside innit? Boat ended up through a hedge in a field, no-one hurt apart from a few trees. Was a devils own job though, four of us trying to drag it out of the field and back onto the trailer before Old Bill arrived. Did it though. Boat was a write off, but engine was OK. Not insured then and only cost him a couple of hundred quid so not too painful.

Good luck with the insurers.

Do you claim off your car or boat insurance?

'Once had a similar experience with a canoe. Boat comes off trailer under the legs of a very expensive racehorse which deposits rider on the ground and heads off west. Then boat skips off the kerb and writes off the wing of a parked car.

new wing + vet bills + injury claim + court fine = mega bucks

damage to canoe: gell coat + time to repair = about 32p

cest la vie

good luck with the insurance

bet money that indespension arm collapsed.they rot from inside.common problem.
almost impossible to spot untill to late.Good dig with point of screwdriver only early warning thing to do.

Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner, trust me.

Spot on in one way ,its an unbreaked trailer so chain would make no differance.
