Good Morning

I have always wanted to own a motor yacht and have it moored in the Med. It is something i am now seriously considering. I'm 32 years old and i have two young children (7&4). I'd like to own a boat which is big enough to enjoy with some friends and family and possibly sleep on for the odd night or two.

I would like something which is easy to operate and not too expensive to moor or service. I have been looking at the Fairline Targa 37 model.

Can anyone give me some idea of the following;

1) What size mooring would that boat require?
2) Does it need regular servicing and how much should i expect that to cost?
3) How far can you travel on a full tank of fuel?
4) How much does it cost to fill up with fuel?
5) How much does insurance cost?
6) Do i require any licenses to operate a boat?
7) Any suggestions for locations to keep the boat?

Thanks

1. As big as you can afford and fit the boat into
2. Every year and about £1500 if you pay somebody to do it
3. Depends upon fuel but maybe 1.5mpg ish
4. In the UK its about £0.89 per ltr for diesel
5. About £400 per year
6. No
7. Somewhere nice.

Can anyone give me some idea of the following;

1) What size mooring would that boat require? 12m. Dependent on where you are in the Med the default will be buy/rent
2) Does it need regular servicing and how much should i expect that to cost? Yes. Big item will be outdrives. Delicate bits of gears suspended in salt water with a thin ally case...
3) How far can you travel on a full tank of fuel? If you get 1 and a bit gallons to the mile you will be not far out. Plus you need to leave a margin of say 20% for when conditions are adverse and the mpg drops as you battle into them.
4) How much does it cost to fill up with fuel? Approx road price for diesel
5) How much does insurance cost? Guessing but prob £1k-ish
6) Do i require any licenses to operate a boat? Not generally (with limited exceptions) but you'd be mad not to get some sensible training
7) Any suggestions for locations to keep the boat? Cote d'Azur = reassuringly expensive. Spain popular: mainland and Balearics (known hereabouts as Baldricks) also popular. Croatia worth thinking about possibly.

Thanks + Welcome

you're going to get a few different view on this, but for whats its worth:-

1) What size mooring would that boat require?

depends on the marina, but that would go on a 10m mooring where I am, but in other marinas, you might need an 11 or 12 m mooring.A mooring for that size boat in a popular (read that as expensive) marine in majorca could easily be £8-£10k per annum if you rent. a similar mooring on mainland spain might cost ~£3k

2) Does it need regular servicing and how much should i expect that to cost?

once a year at least the engines and drives will need a service, assuming you're going to be paying someone else, and assuming lift out costs and yard storage are included in these figures, I would budget £1200 per side on average (some years will be less , some will be more), so £2400 all in . But dont forget you may need a yearly antifoul of the hull, which could easily be another £500-£1000 if paying someone.

My service bill this year came to £2700, that was an especially large service of the (single) engine and drive, but in addition to the usual oil/filters etc included things like all new belts, pulleys, tensioners , new outdrive bellows etc , antifoul, polish hull and topsides etc. this is in contract to last years bill that came to £1200, as it was a small service, oil, filters and antifoul.

3) How far can you travel on a full tank of fuel?

assume 1-1.5mpg.

4) How much does it cost to fill up with fuel?

A boat that size will probably have ~800 litre tanks, fuel prices in the balearics were about 90p per litre a few weeks ago, so £720 from totally empty, probably more like £600 because you'd never run it down so low.

5) How much does insurance cost?

As a total novice, assuming no experience I reckon £750-£1000, maybe less as you gain experience.

6) Do i require any licenses to operate a boat?

Not officially, but most insurers will probably require you to have an ICC (international certificate of competance) as a minimum. Would be sensible to get more training.

7) Any suggestions for locations to keep the boat?

Depends on your budget, whether you intend to do short weekends on the boat or long weeks etc. Balearics is nice, but expensive.

Mooring in the Med is very expensive. I cruise in the Med, but moor inland France, much easier and cheaper. If you consider this an option I can give you full details as I have a Princess 37ft twin engine flybridge cruiser.
