I know that a fellow forumite is the UK dealer for this boat and this post is not meant to rubbish the boat itself. I'm sure it's a jolly fine thing but my point is that David Marsh's boat reports are becoming increasingly like advertorials for the manufacturer concerned, hysterically over praising any good features and glossing over any bad ones. I can understand that magazines have to keep their advertisers on side but IMHO this lack of objectivity is seriously reducing the credibility of the magazine
In this particular test, Marsh described the A45 as 'so significant that it has the power to reshape this section of the sportscruiser market' and Absolute's achievement as 'scary'. Eh? All they've done is taken advantage of the new more powerful sterndrives and bunged them in a bigger boat. Hardly ground breaking and its been done before on a large sportscruiser (Superhawk 48) . Then there's is the cover of the mag which screams 'absolute bargain'. Yeah right, as if anything costing £279k can be described as a bargain
Worse, Marsh fails to ask any awkward questions like why the manufacturer has gone for sterndrives when the boat seems to be a no brainer for IPS. Then what about the low speed handling? No word at all on that. I hope this thing has got a bloody great bowthruster. Then there is the question of the cabin space. If Fairline can sqeeze 3 cabins into a shaftdrive 48' sportscruiser, why have'nt Absolute used the extra internal space freed up by the sterndrive installation to do the same? OK, maybe they deliberately chose to provide only 2 larger cabins but then you've got to ask why put double berths in both cabins? Well I guess its because all Absolute 45 owners are never going to want to go cruising with kids who refuse to share a bed or guests who are not a couple?
Again, I'm not raising these points to be critical of the boat itself just to point out that Marsh is either failing to do his job or has been told to write uncritical glowing reports that don't offend anyone. I, for one, do not subscribe to MBY to read the same kind of tosh I can get from the manufacturers' brochures
Rant over
