After 2 years of planning, we moved on board two months ago. And after a dash through the canal of France to beat the closures, we were the last boat out of the Canal De Centre, with 7 hours to spare, we can at last rest, and try to enjoy this sailing life.
Down to the Med later this month, with Christmas in hopefully warn waters;

Congratulations from me as well.
I'm up for that as well in a year or 18 months.
But what's this about the closures? I didn't know the canals were closed for part of the year. When do they open and close then?

we found French people to be very helpfull and friendly all the way through France and Corsica. The French are good sailers and go out in most weather. Most marinas will let you stay for a half day for free so you can visit the town and pickup supplys without paying unlike England. They dont like ignorant Enlish people who shout loudly at them in English waving thier arms crazily, Or order bif steak well done. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Two points . . .

- Throughout our nine months travelling through France we found French people to be courteous and friendly. But it helps to be courteous and friendly to them in the first place, and to do one's best to speak French. Fair enough, say I.

- Many French canals and waterways are closed during the winter - to pleasure craft at the least, but often for maintenance (the Canal du Centre was completely drained when we were in St Jean de Losne, er, oh crumbs was it the Bourgogne? - anyway, the one that goes through Dijon). The Midi closes. Check on the VNF website.
