Rumour has it that there is a smugglers tunnel leading to E.Aberthaw. Has anyone got any old charts of the port. (it was the biggest in the BC at one time.) I think i know but would like to check before digging up a floor.I lived there so think i'm right.

No, Police might get funny, but i was interested to know where it would probably have gone.
Ps....what do you want smuggling in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Joking.

well known as a landing site

Now we all know that you have diverse business activities, but when you start talking about smuggling and digging up floors.......

Can we expect an extra line to your sig in the near future ?

Yeah, right, so how did i get in there?

Elsewhere on the island there is circumstantial evidence of smuggling. A old mine shaft on the north side connects with a series of natural tunnels, and a sea-facing exit to the system has been cleverly filled with masonry and disguised as solid rock. These concealed chambers are well-hidden, and even on close inspection would pass for a derelict tin mine

Re tunnel

Andy it definitely runs directly under your kitchen. All you need to do is rip out the units and dig down about 10 feet.

Put all the earth in your living room for now.Its rumoured theres gold down there so keep it quiet :-)

His wife's gonna kill him - knowing Andy he will give serious thought to digging it up now, just on the off chance!!!

I might borrow my mates Kango.....the floor can't be that thick, when you tap a certain area is sounds hollow. That room is logical looking at old maps. The room has never been used for at least 35 years as far as i know. Also the floor looks different unless it got bombed in the war? Then patched up.Other thing is a wooden pulley block directly above it.

Edit. Just had a thought....if it was bombed what if the bomb didn't go off........Huw do you want to do the Kango and i'll keep an eye on the genny 100yds away.

It could be a well, not just a tunnel. You could be onto to a winner with your own bottled water supply, or maybe Cardiff Environmental Services will tell you to fill it in.....

Don't fall in ! I'd drill a small hole first to check how deep the gap is below the floor.

Sully

I think the tunnel running from The Captains Wife pub to sully island is still there but partialy blocked,

I was in conversation with a relief manager a few years back and he told me all about it,

they went about 50 yards along the tunnel and chickened out.but not because it was blocked but because they were spooked by something.

In fact the pub is reputed to be haunted.staff have reported all sorts of strange things going on...but that was before it was refurbished.

I always though the Captain's Wife/Sully Island tunnel was just a legend - perhaps I'm wrong??? Anyone know of any photographs? They never lie!!!

smuggling tunnel at Barry

I grew up in Barry, and can vouch for a smugglers tunnel that went from a cave entrance on the Island to the mainland. Been down it, although it somehow seemed shorter than I expected.

For those who need encouragement to dig floors or break down walls, the story I like best is the family in Casteltown who broke through a wall in 1935 to find a 18th century armed schooner in a secret boathouse. http://www.iomguide.com/nauticalmuseum.php

Good luck with the pickaxes
