Good evening:

I have noticed this abbreviation a number of times and can't figure what the heck it means.

I have managed to figure out many of the others but this one eludes me. Makes me feel like a child listening to my elders discuss a weighty subject which I am meant to understand

Could someone please advise translation.

Cheers

There is a third meaning. AWB is A W@nkers Boat. This is unkind and i am only passing it on for your complete education. A W@nkers boat is owned by someone who cannot manage the real thing. In other words, it can be likened to a moped that is not allowed on the motorway.

Being a man of simple mind I still don't understand that allusion but as I say, I feel that I must pass on this information.

Ok I have already got my coat on.

I think the RNLI use ALB (All-Weather Life Boat) and ILB (Inshore Life Boat)

Thanks for your correction. I was basing my reply on a comment made on Seaside Rescue (not the most reliable of sources I admit.) A quick Google on 'RNLI' and 'AWB' returned many hits from websites of local RNLI groups where the meaning was All Weather Boat. On the parent site only Rhyl seem to have been forced to use a BenJenBav. Poor dears!

Perhaps I've been misled?

and all of this time I thought it meant.......

A very nice vessel built of contemporary materials to a contemporay design, usually, but not always, having a White hull, owned by those having the view that the sea is a Broad church with room for all, together in perfect harmony.

Yes completely misled...

Here's a simpler definition to avoid any further confusion:

AWB = A very smart looking boat that you would happily sail across the channel in.

MAB = A much less smart looking boat that you would happily sail across the Atlantic in.

What's the correct shortform for a tatty old boat that you would have reservations about crossing the harbour in?
