ok. so i'm running 290dp penta legs with good old fashioned cable controls. when close quarter manoeuvres are called for and i just pop it into gear I seem to have some thrust but not much (really hard to judge its that little) then when a few revs are applied it seems to jump into gear with a clunk and takes off like the clappers. I have my suspicions but would like to call on the wealth of knowledge in here to confirm my deepest darkest fears.

Slipping cone clutch

Only other thing to check is the cables are adjusted properly to ensure they are advancing, retracting far enough to engage the clutch properly.

Another thing to check is the clearance under the big washer on top of the upper gear at the top of the vertical shaft, should be no more than 1mm IIRC, this is under the top cover.
