Morning all...

Trying to source some A4 stainless fasteners for fixing acrylic windows to a yacht.

The sort I'm looking for are the large(ish), flat head (i.e. NOT countersunk) bolts with a corresponding "sleeve nut", both with allen heads - ideally around 15-16mm diameter for an M6 bolt. All I can find is small headed "button head" bolts, although I can't remember the proper name for them.

The windows are in place, but we could only use zinc plated ones as a temporary fix (all Screwfix had in!)... Now we're stuck trying to find A4 stainless ones to replace the cheapies before winter.

Anyone got any ideas? The holes are drilled, so we need fixings that are fairly flat and M6 diameter.

Cheers!

Thanks, they look about right, but the ones we used were these: Joint Connector Nuts

They look great and are smooth to ensure good sealing...

Will have a look around on t'interweb for interscrews

They do exist in A2 / A4 grades, M5 and M6 etc . I got ours with V. slightly domed heads with hex sockets outside, flat blade screwdriver inside. Came from a nut & bolt place somewhere near the midlands. Not particularly cheap(!) We needed over 100, so it came out to almost £65 for the lot. (about 35mm long). I don't have access to the receipt, so can't quote the place right now. Lots of searching was needed, and some phone calls to check materials.
Our originals were anodised alloy, and many had crumbled to next to nothing. I have had some of the stainless ones out since then - replacing a window, and they were unmarked, and easy to remove. Well worth the effort.

That sounds OK... The windows run to several hundred ££, so £65-100 to finish the job right is reasonable.

Still looking...

Hadlow marine windows do them in A4 but not sure whether they come with Allen head. They were the best value I came across

Now I'm really struggling to find the actual bolts for any price... 20mm A4 stainless button heads are too small. Button flange head all seem to be A2 stainless...

Trafalgar yacht services I think do the sizes that fit Westerly

Hadlow marine,

Eagle boat windows,

Seaclear windows

A2A4

Sea screw

Anglia stainless

Are all places that may have them.

Cannot say I have ever noticed hex headed ones, only slotted, countersunk and socket headed

Try searching for:

Sex bolts
Chicago Bolts
Barrel Bolts

Big use in knock down furniture, IKEA, and in book binding (I'd think the latter a dying business)

The problem might be the size you want.

There is a company in Oz (postage is not that high) Bridco (I think its bridco.com.au) who do M5, M6, M8 and M10 barrel bolts, just the sleeve in 316 stainless. The main application is in balconies - they are the end terminals for stainless wire. The head of the sleeve might be an issue (its hex but not dome) but you can buy the inner fitting anywhere and with any head imaginable (you do not need to buy a set).

Try Techni-Cable in the UK - they are into balcony type fittings and do lots of marine stuff (shackles). I and others on this site have bought shackles from them, great service.

But be careful of balcony fittings the thread does not go to the end of the sleeve, for a 35mm sleeve the thread might only be 20mm.

There is a company in America, name eludes me, who specialise in this sort of thing but they did not reply to emails.

I've just been through the same search, a bit unsatisfactory (I wanted a 12mm sleeve) - the Chinese will make them in 316 at about $1 a set but you need to buy thousands.

Another option is to look for threaded sleeves, then buy heads for each end.

If you get anywhere let us know.

I got some 4mm A2 stainless sleeved nuts from this company: http://www.avonstainlessfasteners.co.uk

Doing the same job again I would use locknuts and cut off excess, thread here: http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...Steel-Interscews-with-slotted-head&highlight=

Whilst sourcing the interscrews/sleeved nuts, when I was originally looking for aluminium, I came across this company:

http://www.ukpatternbookfasteners.co.uk/product.html

They are I believe I machining/turning company so might be worth talking to to see if they are prepared to manufacture what is required.

I have aluminium interscrews and machine screws which I took out if anyone wants them for cost of postage/courier.

Approx 50x10mm interscrews, 25 X 13mm interscrews and 70 or so slot headed machine screws 4mm dia approx. 10mm long. They were originally brown anodised but that has gone from the heads of the machine screws.

I asked for sex nuts in orbital fasteners (Watford.). When they stopped laughing they found some m6 in a2 for me. Thanks to this thread, I need not embarrass myself again.

It gets worse, we asked for the Chinese characters used for these devices and literally they appear to call them 'Mother and Son' bolts, which made me think about Oedipus, but maybe we are not sufficiently practised in Chinese and it might be 'family' bolts.
