A well trimmed Duplex lamp is superior in every way to a Tilley

Dylan

Why bother with obsolete technology - its decades since we used oil lamps in the house because leccy does the job better. If you want to be minimalist, why not get and LED camping light from Aldi next time they come up. Batteries last forever, no risk of fire, so smelly fuel, not trimming etc.

If you're not careful, you'll be going down to the boat by horse and swapping your outboard for a sweep.

Try an Aladdin lamp! No noise, no pressure and very bright. It does have a fragile mantle like pressure lamps though and isn't as compact as the hurricane lamps I use as main source of light.

of course I should do the Duplex test first as neither I nor the boat might survive the pressure test

I am sure you are not the only one looking forward to the answer

as a matter of interest I have been asked to do the 8.10 interview on the Today programme to share my findings with a wider eager public

I will welcome the opportunity to extoll the merits of wick trimming

it is obviously one of the reasons why the pressure Lampists are so confident about the so called superiority of the pressure lamp over the Duplex with Chimney

Pressure lamps are very easy to operate

and it is a sad fact that very few Pressurists have even been on a wick trimming course or even, this is unbelievable, never even read a book on the subject

this is a sad endictment on the state of the World

D

PS KTL basic wick trimming courses spanning ten evenings will be starting at the beginning of November

the courses will be run by Jocasta and Hermione as they were last year

Many sailors have learned a huge amount about Wick Trimming form the KTL girls

Of course if you used a lamp with a mantle and tubular wick you could use the simple trimming tool supplies with the lamp to get perfect results every time. Again if you only get as much light and heat as a duplex from a tilley your tilly is f*cked to use the technical term.

Mantles are quite fragile after initial lighting but I seem to recall a spray which protected the mantle from damage. Can't remember the name but I'm sure someone will remind us eventually.

Another vote for the Aladdin even if it's fragile in the mantle department and definitely a 'table' lamp The light is bright and noiseless, I was impressed by my twin wick centre-draught lamp when compared to normal single wick lamps but Aladdin takes the prize. My Tilley has been pumped so much the base has bulged so it has to be hung up nowadays, can't comment on how long it runs between strokes though.
Anyone made the mistake of using garden torch oil in a lamp? it makes the wick a bit 'cholesterolly' and it will jam in the adjuster - bummer.
Of course yer bog standard Dietz is the one for anchor lighting as it stays lit when it's draughty. (but it's good to solder all the joints before using so it doesn't leak)

I had two duplex lamps in the saloon fitted on gimbals. They had been fitted to the forward saloon bulkheads by the previous owner. I removed them because although they were fitted with guards, the heat emitted from them scorched the headlining making unsightly black blotches of ingrained soot that was impossible to remove.

Thats some cockpit Dylan, it looks just like a patio. i use duplex on my boat, they give of loads of light and heat, i have two in the saloon, extra lighting if needed is by candle.

Perhaps they needed to be fitted a bit lower.

I am sorry to say this to you lads

just when you thought that another Pressure Lamp Enthusiast had appeared on these forums I am deeply tempted to become a turncoat

for those outside the Fraternity of Oil Lamp Appreciators

this is a duplex

duplex.jpg

and this is a Tilley

tilly-lamp-death-drama.jpg

Naturally I have refined the lighting procedure and the Tilley is now burning clear and steady

it will run for an hour or more between pumping

In a series of domestic trials last night comparing the Duplex with the Tilley

The Duplex gave off as much light as the Tilley

it smelt no worse

it was silent and was without the radio hiss

It required no pumping

I think that it gave off a similar amount of heat

so unless you can give me a good reason then the Tilley might be for sale

I see that people are selling them for £60 a pop for a good one like mine

D
It looks like you didn't let the dome get up to temp, as long as you use the decent meths with the new warmer thingy it should be fine
;-)

cheers
mick

my fellow Duplists warned me not to post this thread on here

they said (on the Duplex forum) that you have to be careful of of pressure Lamp enthusiasts

it is a well established fact that they have a tendancy to play the man and not the ball when it comes to important matters

Dylan

six hours without a pump?

can this really be true or is it just hyperbole?

I think that you should make a film of it

And 4 pages later we still await the 6 hour film of a tilley lamp burning.
Very difficult to preview such a film without giving the entire plot away.

It's still uploading to youtube. Only another 14 weeks to go. :)

Wow! you must have that Superfast Broadband I've heard tell of.
0.25 MB/s here (if anything at all).
sad news about poor dear Archduke Ferdinand and his good lady, by the way. I'll bet there'll be a bit of a stink about that on the Continent. Lucky to be out of the way of all that sort of thing I say.

Is the UK economic upturn entirely due to KTL industries? Is he going public?

You are correct

the porfolio is now pretty impressive

The KTL Toolkit is still selling very well indeed

the Bungeomatic self steering is now a world leader

the cookery course inclusing the Egg Banjo has now been spun off into a multi-franchise business

The boxo gallery system has sadly been copied outragously

the bikomatic outboard transporter has done fairly well - could be better

The Potheadforkandle space heater is now known throughout the World

Then there is the book retailing

and some sort of DVD thingy as well as millions of words

you are correct - full market launch is coming soon

I am now a Captain of Industry

Dylan

I know from using my tilley lamp that it definitely puts out something close to the 3.5kw claimed by the manufacturer does the duplex really give out that much heat? I think I might get one if it does!
