Not at all boat related, but I came across a copy of The Last English King by Julian Rathbone. Its out of print so you will have to find a copy in a second-hand bookshop or charity shop, but if you do find a copy, read it. It is a fictional tale based on the experiences of a house carl in the service of King Harold Godwinson, both before and after the Norman Conquest. The great thing about the book is the way Rathbone tosses literary allusions from later centuries into the conversation and thoughts of the characters. See how many you can spot.
Edit: Its also pretty good history.
