We English are madder than the magnificent cheese we produce. Apologetic, extremely polite and always happy to queue but every now and again we do things that stop even the craziest Greek or fiery Italian in their tracks and cause them to utter their linguistic equivalent of what the f@%k !!!!
Situated in between Southampton Water and Cowes on the Isle of Wight the Bramble Bank has laid claim to many an unwary sailor over the years, it even had a giant car transporter ferry lying on it for a few weeks in 2015. But the Bramble Bank's true purpose reveals it's self once a year on a particularly low spring tide. Early in the morning as the waters recede vessels of all shapes and sizes converge and unload world class athletes onto the small patch of sand. What then follows is an intense game of cricket. In possibly the most famous cricket match in the world the Island Sailing club take on the Royal Southern Yacht club.
Intense is possibly slightly over stated in that we know who the winner is going to be before we start. This year it was the Island Sailing club's turn to win although it did go down to a final super over. Umpire's decisions might be seen as arbitrary to some, overs don't always comprise 6 balls and the ultra high level of sportsmanship would be alien to most professional players. It was great fun and a unique event.
From 1.37 onward we can be seen although I was actually ashore on the tender.
