Yesterday I took my membership card to the reserve at Abberton with little hope of seeing anything interesting, maybe a few grebes and the odd duck, but it turned out to be rather rewarding. The view from the Bay hide was almost subtropical in appearance with a dozen spoonbills and over 25 great white egrets, as well as may little egrets, godwit and mallard and a few shovellers. A late appearance by five curlew sandpipers made my trip worthwhile, though I struggled to get decent pictures by putting my small camera to the telescope. A marsh harrier was dismantling the carcass of something, probably a heron. I can recommend a visit there if you are nearby.
