I have found a way of stopping bits rusting which may be of use. Spray not with WD 40 but use Motorcycle chain lubricant spray. It is real sticky stuff so it doesn't evaporate as normal oil does. I have used it on previously rusty bits on my motorbike and have progressed to using it on my boat. Exterior parts and also on engine parts and the results have been amazing. A bit messy if you touch it - but no rust. I don't offer any guarantees but well worth trying.

Waxoyl is very good, too. I use it for shroud fittings, where it fills the gap between wire and fitting and sets solid, excluding water at least to some extent. Helps if you warm the fitting first.
