A Tarquin Denial Traderism - Ocean Deep Saga Story

[ QUOTE ]
I consider Tarquin to be negligent in the way they have treated vital safety issues on the boat and I base that consideration on expert reports.

I thought that, as a director of a limited company you cannot wriggle out of neglegance. This would make TC as MD personally liable wouldnt it?

Don't be rediculous Stefan. If you think that the interior of your Princess is better than a Trader you obviously haven't looked at one. Pauls Ocean Deep might be a friday night special, but every Trader I have looked at has a fabulously crafted and solid interior.

only trouble with that reasoning is err boats just aren't knocked up in a few days. so not friday night syndrome. which was just a figure of speech of course, but how on earth can so many things over various stages of the build, have been done so wrong?? did TC upset the yard in Taiwan? - goodness knows.

I'd love a good look around some other Traders, since I'm sure they aren't all that bad eh?

well, a bit of a run for me at 6 knots, sadly, but thanks Tony. Maybe a drive down sometime.

Gludy's boat is a puzzler for sure, no doubt the same yard produce boats for other brand-names; & they surely would not be in business if the std product had 1/3 of Ocean Deep's problems.

Out of interest, how old are the three fine examples you mention?

The boats at Weymouth are 1 year, 5 years and 18 years.

Why Pauls boat is of such poor build quality is a mystery, most new boats have a few problems, including Traders and I know that the 1 year old had a whole list of very small problems on delivery.

I have to disagree, Traders have always been a bit iffy behind the scenes. They may look OK on the surface, but have look at what is hidden away on ANY Trader of ANY age.
I have at times thought about Traders since 1988 but they have never ever improved the quality, only increased the price!

Could you be more specific, perhaps list a few facts and examples other than OD? Are you refering to Trader as a marque or Tarquin as a supplier? Also would you list some makes that do not have any faults from new and are not at all "iffy".

Trader as a marque or Tarquin as a supplier

As I understand it, they are one and the same. Tarquin are not a "dealer", they are Trader.

I have a friend with a 26 year old Trader and that boat is fine and solid.

I know of another Trader where, yes there were problems but they were sorted by Trader Wales and the owners are happy.

I know of yet another Trader were it took two years to sort out including two winters back at Emsworth but now its sorted the owner would not swap the boat for the world.

I have often stated on here that once sorted I believe a Trader to be a good boat.

I hope you agree with all the above. I am trying to be balanced and fair.

What cannot be disputed is that my boat, which I have not been able to use properly for 16 months is a mess. What I also think cannot be disputed is that the service I have received from Tarquin has been deplorable.. Combine those two together and you have a nightmare.

All I want is an end to my nightmare. There are now signs of the issue coming to an end.

I appreciate the advice, which is sound.
What I can say as a fact is that my surveyor has, amongst many things, rejected the work done by Trader on, for example, the fixing of the thrust to the boat. I need not expand on the implications.
The mortgage lender is now involved. After me trying to get them involved for a year it suddenly went to Director level.
I am hoping that resolution is just around the corner.
My next battery of actions included some of your suggestions and you have given me ideas for some others. These, I hope will not be needed. They were to be combined with growing publicity of the provable facts of my case.

If I now get resolution, IMHO it will be because I have used publicity. I think without that we would not be approaching the resolution that seems to be nearer.

At the end of the day, I do not think that Tarquin have done themselves much good in treating me the way they have but once there is a settlement I am putting it all behind me and will leave others to judge what happened. I will not comment further once that resolution is in place.

Ok I'm looking at the back of the furniture what in particular am I looking for? The cabling is in Square plastic conduit and is easily accessible with removable covers for maintenance and modification.

Tell me do you have any pictures of the backs of furniture and cabling for any other makes of boat - how about Nimbus for example!

You know that I have supported you and endorse all that you have said about Tarquin, however as Taxi-vader has stated Trader and Tarquin are one and the same then, if this is fact, then surely “Trader” Wales must be tarred with the same brush!

I have followed The Ocean Deep saga from the beginning and will help you in any way that I can. However I am uncomfortable with the fact that there are a number of forumities who seem to enjoy knocking Traders (the boats not the company) just for the hell of it. Most of them seem to be ill informed and are making judgement solely from the OD exerience. I suspect that in doing so they feel more comfortable with their own choice of boat (nana na nana my boats better than your boat). I feel that these people are not doing your cause any good at all, and are probably the reason why you are not attracting support from the many other Trader owners that are out there. There are quit a few of these owners that have had a bad experience with Tarquin but would not have any other type of boat. I have looked at many alternatives but would prefer a Trader over most other makes (including Nimbus!).

I have stated many times that the design and whole concept of the boat is great - that is why i bought it.

It offers packs of space, with the stabilisers very comfortable slow cruising at a fantastic mpg even with twin 700hp engines. Yet I can hop up to 25 knots if I have to make the lock.

My friends boat is about 25 years old, worth more in £s than it was new and is a very solid boat.

As you also have stated - many people have runs in with TC - indeed there have been some very recent public ones without me!

My problem was that I had spent almost £1m and not been able to use my boat for 16 months to date. The very limited use I have had has been fraught with problems including the trip here to Emsworth.

There are still major problems with thrust brackets, engine alignment etc and this is after 16 months. At no time has the boat been seaworthy even though at times I believed it to be.

Given this nightmare I have no choice now but to go for a full refund plus costs. At no time has TC been active in trying to settle these matters – there are over 500 emails and letters between myself and Tarquin as I struggled to get matters dealt with.

I therefore have used the publicity of my provable experience to try to get justice and in no way more than I am entitled to.

In that process I think the name of Trader boats has been damaged and I am sorry for that. I do not wish to hurt any existing owner and if TC had met his obligations a year ago this problem would never have arisen.

I know of really stupid things on other makes of boat – I know stories of owners being refunded by major makes and others suffering badly BUT the difference is that those companies in the end had to replace or satisfy.

Even recently TC told Glenn from this forum that the few people reading my ‘blog’ do not bother him. All that did was make me increase pressure. I know that have lost serious sales – not prospects but sales that have gone elsewhere.

As regards Trader Wales – frankly they have a totally different attitude and the same thing would have not developed had I purchased the same boat from them. For a start they call in experts to check over all aspects of the boat before handing it over and from the experience of others, I know that they deal with problems well.

I think a settlement of this issue involving me returning this boat to Tarquin is about to be discussed. If those discussions start I may have stop posting pending a resolution. I know that for any resolution I would have to agree to shut up on the subject and I think that is reasonable.

However if there is any messing about or twists and turns from Tarquin I will not hesitate to increase publicity.

Whilst any talks are going on, I am stick without a boat.

IF TC sees sense and settles now it would be better for him. myself and all his other customers.

Tonybob,
Not sure why you are comparing a Trader with a Nimbus?
You should be comparing a Trader with a Grand Banks or Fleming to compare quality, I certainly did and bought a Fleming back in 1991 and there was no comparison.
You are happy with your Trader and that is fine, IMHO it is just in the same league as some other boats.

After spending four and a half years working in Taiwan, I can tell you theres no such thing as Friday Night. It's every night of the week, plus a complete retrain on Monday morning, tea breaks need to be kept short as well otherwise the left off point will be forgotten.
QC is only carried out on the first operation when the entire factory will turn out, after that it's left to who ever??? to get on with the job.
He will quickly think why spend an hour laying up matt and coat, when you can sell the matt and pour in a bucket of gue and spend the rest of the shift asleep.
The taiwanese also have a culture of sub-contracting and this can be done 10 or 12 times with a single trade. The last subcon being poorly underpaid while the others are just 'briefcase and black BMW firms'
From what I saw while there I would not go near a Taiwan built boat.

I wasn't really comparing Trader with Nimbus, you need to study previous posts and posters to understand the reason for the comment.
I agree with your comment about Flemings, if I was looking to buy a 55 boat I would seriously consider them. However When I purchased my 44ft I looked at most of the alternatives and made my choice on personal preference. In following the threads about what has happened to Gludy, some people may feel this was a bad decision. I have to say that apart from some very shabby treatment and service from the "suppliers" I have been very pleased with the boat.

Forgot to mention

When you issue a writ against tarquin you can also apply to the court for an order against them to lodge the amount claimed with the court ie put your money where your mouth is

If Tarquin cant then do this you can then issue a winding up order and either or you can also appy for an injunction on their bank ie freezing the account

I might also be worth looking in companies house at all the trader dealers with a view to see how they are linked financially

this will put the pressure on tarquin to find the funds PDQ

I think you would be hard pressed to find a more roomy boat at 44 foot than yours.

I think with the 575's they are maybe pushed a boat too far.

I went for the standard extended keel option - it failed.

I went for the anti-vibration system Poseidon - they have failed to secure it.

I went for a water maker - it has taken 16 months to get the installation right.

I went for a model that basically extends the 535 - the fibreglass at the join on the hull is cracking.

Out of the 17 exterior fibreglass door on the boat all but I think 2 have had to be taken away and gel coated again!!! Even the two large side panels down the aft deck have had to be redone and out back with what must be the worlds worst corner joint.

Did we purchase them from the same supplier? Because the shoddy service etc has really got little to do with the boat - it just adds greatly to the nightmare.

I did not expect them to create problems like putting the water in the hydraulic oil or ignoring oil leaks in engines and gearboxes. I never expected them to hand me the boat for the first day out with anodes gone, no oil showing on the dipstick in the gearbox, low coolant levels and so many other problems too numerous to mention.

They have their own full time inspector in the yard where they are built – it amazes me how major, major problems escape him.

I went on the previous 575 at the Trader Day in 2005 and could not believe the vibration at the aft deck - it was deplorable and I told them afterwards that they would lose custom if they did not fix it - at that time I foolishly thought they did not know about it with the chap always at the helm. That had the same anti-vibration system!!

Whenever I communicated helpful suggestions like that I seldom got a response …. I ignored the warning sign.

There are unofficial chats going on at present about them taking the boat back. We shall see what they come up with. One thing I shall not tolerate is any delaying tactics with the process that is about to start. If they had any sense at all they would hopefully see that its in everyone’s interest to settle this matter now. I have never heard the word ‘sorry’ from Tony Chappell – I do not expect it now. Perhaps, just perhaps that is the root of the problems that Tarquin appears to have with its customers.

Nimbus seems to have been mentioned in this thread? Not too sure where the comparison exists?

As an ex-nimbus owner can I add for the record that build quality and build standards are first class on the Nimbus.
