As discussed on MapisM's excellent pictorial report from Puglia region, imho it would great to have a sticky thread for cruise reports into which links to individual reports could be posted. I personally enjoy immensely the pic/vid -reports and they are a great escape amidst, say a busy week at the office. However, as it is now, they are in a sense a bit of a throwaway stuff which is a shame as they often take a lot of effort from the indivudual posting them.

A sticky would make trip reports so much easier to find and we would also get more value out of them.

So what do you say.

Definitely, lots of effort goes into those reports but they then disappear within a week or two.

The current stickies are way out of date.

Absolutely +1, and not because of my heel thread - far better reports were posted in the past by other forumites, but it takes passion and time to search them, which reduces the forum value.
And eventually, also the number of clicks, just in case this argument could grab more attention from the admins...! :D

Absolutely +2. You're right that is takes a lot of effort, and it is a shame to lose them. It will take quite a bit of effort to find the existing stock of reports, but between us we can do that

The sticky needs to be organised, with say just the name of the location and the year as the post tile, and no-one replying by saying "great vid. How much are marinas in Italy". I'm sure the mods could organise that. Sorry to sound school-teacherish about that!

Scubaman, this is a great idea! Actual trip reports are not only a welcome escape from a typical grey day in N-Europe, but also (as mentioned by MapisM in his Puglia thread) cannot be more fresh than any pilot guide. Hope other forumites will support this initiative.

I agree it would be a good idea to have a sticky with links to individual reports but not to lump all cruise reports on one sticky. Btw who is going to decide what is a cruise report and whether it is worthy of a sticky link? I know myself that an awful lot of work goes into some cruise reports but is a thread with a few pics of an afternoon cruise from Southampton to Yarmouth going to be worthy of a sticky link? Also might it not discourage some forumites from posting cruise report-lite type threads because they don't think it will be worthy of a link? Still its a good idea and should be done

I dont think a sticky is the way to go. I think it warrants a sub - forum under Mobo as the parent otherwise you'll have too many stickies taking up the front page.

I agree that each report link should be an individual post on a sticky thread. I also think that the whole thread could be self moderated so that anyone could post a link to a report she likes. All commenting should stay on the original thread as it is now. I wouldn't worry about the odd duplicate or worthiness of a link. In my view any post with a pic or a piece of shaky camera phone vid of the author's boating action is good enough. It still conveys the feeling and lets you in on the action so is well worth a link, imho. The more we have them the better and it would be so much easier to browse through them from a single thread.

Imho having it within the mobo section would be more convenient and in some odd way more intimate than having it as a separate forum but each to their own on that.

My vote is just for a sticky on this forum, not a separate forum. FWIW, I don't have time to look at another forum, but in any case the whole idea imho is to have just one thread containing 50-100 posts each with a link to a cruise report thread, with no discussion posts at all, only posts containing links. There should be no actual cruise reports on the thread and no "That looks great, thanks" posts. Posts on the sticky thread should contain only links plus a sentence of description "Menorca, summer 2009, squadron 58, crossing from Antibes to Mahon, with a couple of days in Mallorca also (Palma only)" or something like that plus a link. Then it's very easy to flick through what will function like an index page and find the cruising area you want to read up on, and click the link. All imho -it will be whatever people make of it!

I think this is a great idea. Cruise reports can take some compiling only for them to disappear into obscurity within a relatively short space of time. I have invested quite a bit of time and effort in doing one or two over the years and have always thought that it is a shame that people who would be interested probably won't find them.

I think I am with jfm on the format.

To make this happen we'd need some help from the admins :).

Would be nice to get input from them on the idea. I'm not sure who would be the correct person to pester about this. Jack maybe?

this is a great idea. it's reading the brilliant cruise reports that inspired me to finally buy a boat. The format described by jfm sounds spot on.

Not much progress on this. I got a reply from Jack suggesting to get in touch with Stef, the ybw.com editor.

I've emailed her twice to enquire her view on the idea but haven't yet gotten a reply. Will keep trying though.

That's weird... Did you explain them that what we are asking can't take more than 10 minutes, for anyone with admin access!?! :ambivalence:
