A stark reminder that not everyone on the river is as nice as you lot...

Hi all,
Haven't been on in a while, and annoyingly this time my reason for posting is to complain :(
I was coaching rowing earlier on a fairly windy day, with a group of 6 totally new juniors, 5 in a Quad and 1 in a single, and as you can expect it was painful trying to teach them anything. The single managed to fall in after 20 minutes, the quad had no common sense to speak of, all in all a difficult group.
However all was going well towards the end of the session (they finally learnt how to go in a straight line...) until a passenger boat arrived on the scene. I saw the boat approach from behind (about 600m upstream at this point) and started to move the juniors across to the side of the river. As I was doing this however, the passenger boat decides that the best route for overtake would be on the inside, where I am directing my crews. No attempt at all was made to slow down the vessel (in fact one of the juniors was adamant it sped up), and whereas by now two pleasure boats had passed around the outside of the crews without any drastic changes to their route, this vessel continued to plough towards us. with 100m to go he sounds his horn to signal our intentions were unclear, to which I signal to the crews to get further into the bank. At 50m no attempt whatsoever was made to slow their boat, at which point I lose my cool and shout at the juniors to sprint into a tree, which they crash headlong into to avoid this boat, which throws on full astern 25m away, coming to a stop 2m to my side and nearly on top of the juniors.
At which point he shouts at me, then gestures obscenely at myself and the juniors. Thankfully no-one was hurt and the juniors' boat only had slight damage from ramming the side, but it was so close it could have easily been much worse.

Usually if an incident happens while I'm coaching I don't mind, as half the time one of the juniors did something stupid, but in this case I can honestly say I did everything I could to avoid collision, and this launch didn't. If they had slowed down earlier or maneuvered into the empty middle of the river it would have easily been avoided. Also the obscenities were most definitely not helpful.

:( Not a happy day on the river for me today...

There are many unpleasant people in most river based activities. Moored at Fawley Meadows last Sunday morning I watched a Hobb's small hire motorboat (one one the aluminium ones with an outboard) happily, and rather slowly, cruising along on the RHS of the river. Two robo's were coming up river one towards the inside and one more to the centre. The happy middle-aged couple were shouted at by one of the fours "move over" very aggressively, only to be shouted at the other boat which they they were then in front. Doesn't seem much now, but I'm sure it ruined the couples trip on the river.

OT, but one of the Reading local papers last week had a report of a court case involving a rower suing a hire narrowboat over a collision.

Yes, some adult rowers can be aggressive/shouty.

Rebellion is talking about Juniors ie under 16s or younger.
How scared do you think they were when a steamer the size of a juggernaut charged at them. How much do you think it spoiled their day on the river when a so called professional so badly mid-handled his vessel and then resorted to swearing and v signs?

And how scared was Rebellion, who, as their coach was fearing for the safety (and possibly the lives) of his young charges?

Not quite on the same level is it?

Probably the same ones who yelled at us a couple if weeks ago as they squeezed through on the inside and overtook us.....

We gave them several fingers and opened a bottle if red. T0ssers :D

Sorry, Rebellion's post was a possible life & death matter, totally different to the small incident I related, so apologies if you thought I was trying to say the two incidents were comparable.

As a generalisation though there are some unpleasant people in most river based groups (my interest, wooden trad boats, has it's fair share particularly amongst the slipper boat crowd) who don't respect other people's activities.

A nasty business all round. I absolutely trust Rebellions version of events, and trust the Skipper involved is duly castigated. :(

Thanks Ian.

As a family we are involved in Motor Cruising, Kayaking, Pulling (fixed seat traditional boats), rowing & sculling & small powered craft (small ribs etc).

My son & I have also done some angling, and cycling along the towpath.

Oh & SWMBO and my son have also been Narrowboating.

As a result we have seen the good sides & bad sides of pretty much all those user groups ......:D:D

No apology required Ian: I was just commenting on the unpleasantness of some river users, which is not the sole reserve of ANY particular group.

The boat in question is not "a local", it it?
The company office is down the estuary and they don't uderstand the etiquette upstream :) :)

No excuse, so perhaps a quiet word from Teddington on their nexdt trip upstream might not go amiss?

I recall something very similar happening with the Kingwood at a regatta near Hampton Court earlier in the Summer.

Not all class V skippers are like that, I have had some very positive dealings with the Turks skippers in particular whilst coaching. They are always understanding and slow down - sound signals etc.

Rebellion tells me they find Turks to be very good.

Apparently there have been a number of reports about the behaviour of the skipper of Kingwood (and also Connaught).

I wouldn't put the Connaught in the same league.

Colliers operate the Connaught , and they are without fail a lovely bunch of guys. Mainly skippered by family members ( Arthur, Danny or John ) , very considerate to other river users generally and very professional.

You must bear in mind that the Connaught is very similar in looks and paint scheme to the Kingwood , i have mistaken them myself at times ;)

Turks are on the Kingston stretch where my tub is moored and they are no problem.
Only problem I have had to date on this stretch was an out of control frenchman in his punt who collided with me (and apologised profusely) in the cruise by lane during one of the Thames Ditton skiffy punty events. Accepted the apology as not my fault but still got shouts from the club spectators nevertheless.:)

That'll larn him, high pitched squeaky shouting wont be half as intimidating!:D

Harumph! Sorry, I'll get me coat.
