It's July 22nd and most of us in Aberaeron are still not afloat, the annual lift-in has been cancelled this year as we can't guarantee safe social distancing during the mass craning in.
A couple of yachts are organising individual lift-ins, and the smaller boats can use the slip, but most of us are resigned to writing 2020 off.
Still there is one good thing, working on the boat in the Summer is a lot more comfortable than in the middle of Winter!
I'm sure we aren't the only ones affected.

Down in Almerimar, the yard is more or less 100% full, with around 150 yachts, a few of which are 'projects' ?as many owners(both foreign and local) have abandoned sailing for this year. Although launching is an option, it is far cheaper ashore than in the marina.

It's odd, because my boat was in Germany over the winter. At the beginning of this month I went out to have the boat launched. I was expecting Germany to be fairly restrictive, and although there were some token gestures towards social distancing, no one seemed to be giving a damn. Everyone in the marina was walking around as normal.

I went to a large local supermarket, and there were no security guards, no queues to get in, or anything else. The only thing that was mandatory was the wearing of masks.

I was in desperate need of a haircut. I succeeded in getting one yesterday, and the young lady told me that they have been open since the middle of May.

Is all rather strange.

The OH's club had their annual lift in during the first week of June, in order to assist with 'social distancing' they arranged for the crane company to supply people to manoeuvre the boats rather than the members doing this. Otherwise everything was pretty much as normal.

Slightly différent regulations down here, we were restricted on travel distance (no more than 5 miles from home) until July 6th,
and our local council still have not opened the Harbourmasters Office yet.
We also have very narrow window of useable tides for lift-in/ out so everythinghas conned against us.
Several owners are also now concerned that if we do lift-in that if another peak in Covid happens and the is another lockdown we won't be able to get them out again, and no-pne wants to stay in our harbour over Winter!
So all in all it looks as if 2020 is a total no no for us.

A lovely spot but I am struggling to relate the photo to the Aberaeron I visited a couple of times in the 1990's, when there was a cable chair over the harbour. I recall the visitor moorings immediately to starboard as you enter and then back 180 degrees to tuck behind the wall, that would seem to indicate that your photo is reversed-or perhaps my memory of the place is reversed?
I am sorry to hear of your difficulty getting launched, we could all do with some sailing after the past months of misery!

The Aeron Express, in it's recent form ran for about 3 years but failed to make enough money to maintain it, so it went about late 90's. It was a bit of a pain as it restricted access to the inner harbour and had to be lowered if a boat with a mast wanted to to get in to it. The original Victorian one of course disapeared years ago.
Image is not reversed I just cropped out the entrance on the right of the image. You are correct though the visitor mooring is in through the harbour entrance then 180 degree back to Stb on your self, you can just see the nose of a RIB poking into the pic' on the extreme right of the Image which is where the visitors mooring is.

Up here, most of the clubs have not craned in. Not only was crane in seen as impossible, so was commissioning the moorings for the summer.

One harbour did have a late crane in but few boats chose to lift in. Many afraid of a second wave and then not being able to crane out.

We are in because we slipway launched. There are not many sailing boats in commission in the Moray Firth at the moment. We have only seen a handful so far and mostly just small ones like us, and a few Wayfairers etc out for a day sail.

If there is no crane out we have the option of a slipway recovery or staying in for the winter in our sheltered harbour. Staying in for winter would not be an option for boats on moorings (though there probably would be space in the harbour if they wanted)

I share you view, it is a sad sight to see our boats still in their cradles by mid summer. I’m at my boat now, first time since February. The nearby hotel has only recently opened for non-essential stays. Plenty of people walking around but keeping distant rather than usual chat. I think that this visit has helped me to confirm my view that the season is a write-off.

Germany locked down hard when they needed to, knocked down infection rates, and with continued care and monitoring (including an effective tracing program) can now open up again. The UK didn’t, didn‘t, doesn’t have, and can’t.
