Having set off across the Pacific last year with a good supply of cans it was disaster when the can opener broke on day 10 .Replacementwith something robust and reliable has proven a problem since the Chinese seem to have a monopoly of production and there can openers prove fragile .
Can anyone suggest a good can opener please

It's true the cheap ones don't last long onboard. I've just bought a beefy one in Debenhams Brighton!
You should be able to find something similar in NZ. Always carry two!

A slab of concrete might not be available on most boats (:) ) but this might be a good back up - rub the 'top' of the can on the concrete (only for a few seconds), turn the can right way up and squeeze it until the lid pops out. Otherwise watch one of the many YouTube VDOs on this method e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH2NahLjx-Y.

29p ones in Sainsbury's/Tesco, buy several, otherwise stuck with one that stops workin & costs £10, if you want a twisty one. Otherwise its one of the old stabber types, with corkscrew attached, but more dangerous to use.
Not pretty, but the do work.
Could also buy tins with rip off lids.

You need one of these, they're a Scandinavian design with no moving parts. We've had ours for years.
