Bit of a shot in the dark but does anyone know this...

I need to find out the standard length of the push rod that drives a mechanical fuel pump off the crank for a 1995 GM v8 6.5l Diesel engine.

Bit of a problem with fuel pressure so want to measure it to see if it should be longer /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Not expecting too many serious replies but you never know!!

I can't see that a longer push rod will be the answer, as the distance from the cam to the lever will be standard. Most likely the prob is in the diaphragm, or the pipe leading to the injection pump - unless the "tappet" at the lever is worn and not giving a full stroke ?

I have already changed the lift pump which had some wear on the arm so just wanted to check if the rod was long enough i.e. factory length.

As you highlight probably best not to put longer bits and pieces inside the engine as no doubt things will start exploding everywhere!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
 
The fuel line pressure in such a pump is provided by the spring, not the pushrod, otherwise any blockage would result in a burst pipe.

The length of the pushrod would only affect the pumps ability to provide sufficient flow as a short rod would reduce the throw and hence stroke of the pump.
 
the usual lift pump pressure is between 1.5 to 2.5 pounds pressure
If your pump has worn out, or corroded none return valve springs or the actual faces are not sealing you will of course find the fuel can drain back and of course struggle to keep the pressure up
The main diaprhagm is usually the biggest fault as they harden with age and lack of use then split
unleaded fuel can degrade the diaphragm material

Do not change any thing re adding bits !!!!!!

the early ac delco pumps have tiny bakerlight plates with very light springs so be careful with those.
The main reason people get problems is firstly blockges either in the line or tank which should be caught the pumps filter if it gets that far
after that it's people trying to fix some thing that isnt broke meddling !
