A question on a MTU engine of the 90s: any good?

The beast I'm talking about is the MTU 12V183 TE92.
1000hp out of 22liters as I understand, but that's all I know.

I guess this is a question for Latestarter, who probably knows how many bolts they used to build it....
But if also others know anything about its pros and cons, I'm all ears.

Oh, and before anyone ask, I'm considering a boat powered by that thing (with a bit less of two thousands hours), but forgive me for not telling anything else for the moment.
It's such a mad idea that in a sense I hope to hear that the engine is a total lemon, and forget all that PDQ... :D

Thanks in advance!

The TE92 at the end tells me this is one of the GM Detroit based coperation with MTU of the 90s like 670 and 767hp units.

Both these engines popular units on Ferretti's 165/55 and Azimut AZ54 Cinquanta Quattro or 58 Full (same model as 54 with ext platform and better laid out flybridge settee).

It could be in a displacement boat.....................but the boat would be truly enormous!!!!!

Come on P, spill the beans. :encouragement:

A quick googling with "trawler"+ the engine model revealed nothing relevant :). I say, P, hopelly things work out to your satisfaction soon and you can let us on your plan.

Good point, I didn't think of that.
Not that it helps me a lot though, 'cause I still have no idea about how good and reliable (or not) those things were.
Hopefully some of our resident experts will see this...

In the meantime, thanks A_P42 for the link.
And thanks folks for your interest, but aside from not willing to spill the beans yet, I also can't, for reasons out of my control.
I can only say that while it's something far more exotic than the mainstream production boats PYB mentioned, funnily enough I'm pretty sure he knows the boat/yard, and that he would approve for good!
As well as BartW would, more than likely.

Anyway, I'm not holding my breath yet.
Aside from checking what that engine is like, there are other factors that make the probability of finalizing this deal not much higher than 20% ATM. Stay tuned...

80+ft Canados or something similar then or a nice triple planked Cantieri di Pisa?

:p

no idea, maybe a question for LS1?

cheers

Nice try, both great vessels, but nope. And surely not the latter, particularly.
You know, I'm already lazy by nature, and I'm not improving with age! :)
So, as much as I feel sorry to tell this to yourself, I don't think I would buy another wooden boat in this life...

no problems with the not another wooden boat, however I'm struggling to figure out a D vessel that needs 1000HP engine unless we're talking about 25+m long steel trawlers...
on the other end of the spectrum I doubt there's a lake toy for 70+knots using an engine like that, so I'm at loss.

don't worry, take your time and I can wait to see what you're up to.

cheers

I think it starts with a T ;)
All I can say is that it rather starts with a bow and ends with a stern.
I could tell you more, but then I should kill you! :D

No views on those engines yet?
Don't be shy folks, no matter how little you think to know, it'll be always more of my own knowledge... :)

Engines based on Mercedes OM444LA , made in six cylinder in line , V8 , V10 and in your case V12 , individual heads and very robust at sensible ratings . Very similar architecture to the MAN engines . MTU marination should be first class but maintenance needs to be first class also .

I'm glad to see that my post generated a new forumite, welcome to the asylum! :)
And thanks for your contribution, of course.
But I'm afraid that OM444LA doesn't tell me much, to be honest...
...since you mentioned it as if it would be a famous engine, maybe there's more you know about it that you could share with us?
Thanks in advance!

Its no help at all but IIRC the V8 version was called the OM442LA and these were used in a number of the construction machines we sold in the 1990s and they proved to be solid reliable engines except that Mercedes UK service was shite

See I told you I would be no help at all!

Google is your friend here , all the info you will need , spares are available either genuine MTU / MB or after market usually by the OEM part manufacturer , I wouldn't worry about the nuts and bolts of the engine internals , it would be the marine add ons from MTU that will possibly be in question . As Deleted User stated they were used in a variety of machines and generators but MB left the after sales support up to the truck dealers who were reluctant to carry out on site repairs .
