So you are blasting along at 20 knots in a buoyed channel, There are 3 sailing yachts ahead of you in line, all motoring, going in the same direction as you. What're you gonna do?

Depending on space available/conditions, slow up (Rule 6), keep to starboard if safe (Rule 9) (while cognisant of any local rules - Rule 1.b.), if an overtaking situation exists (it may not), keep out of the way (‘well clear’ iaw Rule 16) until past and clear (Rule 13). Keep a good lookout throughout (Rule 5) and if restricted visibility exists (and you cease to see the yachts, which are actually ‘power driven vessels’ iaw Rule 3.b) apply Rule 18 (which trumps Rule 13). Assuming you can see the yacht crews, wave cheerily and smile and hope everyone has a nice day. If the pleasantries are not returned, do a full power 360 and cream past, with a boiling froth of rooster tail, hifi blaring. Mooning an option.

Gosh you were doing so well!

The worst thing that a planing hull can do is slow to semi-displacement speed which creates a wash of mountainous proportions. Either stay on the plane and pass at a safe distance or slow to displacement speed and join the line astern…..

Obviously the boat doeing 20Knots will be restricted in her ability to manoeuvre due to being overloaded with oatcakes.

What difference should it make whether the three boats ahead are yots or mobo's . The boats ahead are motoring so they are in fact slow motorboats.

If overtaking is required in a narrow channel the yots are going very slow then overtake slowly - maybe 1knot faster than the yots.
I do so often when overtaking slow boats on the river .

The situation doesn't sound suitable for 20 knots ?

But if the channel is wide and the overtaking boat can be far enough away, say 50 metres , an overtake at 20 knots should be acceptable as I believe waves do not bother yots too much if they are decent sized yots which I assume they are as they have engines.

If you are like the pensioner in a 34 swift trawler leaving cowes yesterday you burn past the yachts in line which are lawfully going at say 5 knots but keeping behind the elderly centaur or suchlike at the lead squeezing into the gap between the yachts with what is probably half a boat length gap and open up to 10 knots and then carve across the line cutting line as if you are nelson at trafalgar before making your myopic way out to Soton.
