A question for the mechanics amongst you

In two parts:

1) Roughly how many hours' labour do you reckon it would require to do the following on an Alpha 1:

Remove drive leg and bellows
Change oil feed pipe
Fit new bellows
Refit drive leg
Fit new trim and tilt limit switches
Adjust gear cable

2) I had a problem with the gears which - I think - was resolved by adjusting the gear cable; to do this, the leg had to come off. Does that need to involve new bellows, trim/tilt switches, oil feed pipe etc? I accept that they may have been knackered and that this may not have become apparent until the boat came out of the water but would you routinely do stuff like this if you took the leg off?

The bellows were previously replaced last year.

If it were my boat, I would replace the bellows if the leg was off.

Trim/limit switches & oil feed pipe only if knackd in some way, e.g. if I damaged them getting the leg off? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

No you dont have to take the bell housing off to get to the gear shifter linkage, i.e. you dont touch the bellows part of the leg to adjust that (most adjustments are done on the inside of the boat anyway). Regarding gears would only need to go near bellows if changing the gear cable.

Gear adjustment is where the shift cable joins the motor, inside the boat. Unless the cable was corroding and needed replacement, then the leg needs to come off.

Who fitted the bellows last year? Are you moored? Do you leave the drive down?

Depending on how much corrosion there is, probably 4 to 5 hours to do the job, depends how experienced the techy is.
