Praise for raymarine:
I have an old autohelm 4000 wheel pilot and was fussing about the free play between the two parts of the drive unit and thinking about a replacement with the new S1, I am sure better but £750 or so poorer!

I took the old unit in to the Raymarine factory in Portsmouth: they have a very helpful service desk. Once they had recovered from seeing such an antique, they looked at the old drive unit. They reported tht the free play was par for the course, checked it over and replaced the drive belt, all for £83, a huge saving on £750!

They could so easily have given the usual "sorry sir that is too old to repair" line!

Full marks Raymarine, anyone with their kit in the Solent area make a trip to the Portsmouth factory!
I have no links to the company and the electronics on my boat are a mixture of old Stowe, Furuno and Lowrance.

Maybe I'll bring mine over. The local representative gave me a quote which was more than I paid to buy the pilot (2000) new just to replace the printed circuit which got wet ( but you used it outside when it was wet, Sir....) just two months after the warranty ran out.
