A place to pick up on the Itchen

Hi,

A crazy question.

My sons (twins) go to Southampton University. My boat is in Gosport. The weather looks unseasonably good this weekend and thought nipping around from Gosport to the River Itchen to pick them up then lunch on the IOW seemed like a good plan.

Does anyone know how far up the River Itchen I could pick them up. The are near Fish Pond seems the closest point, but I have no idea how navigable that is.

Looking at real marinas, Dyer Brothers Marine seems to the closest real marina, about a 20minute walk. (Just spotted they are tidal)

Anyone got any useful experience of trying to do this? Advice appreciated.

From reading the title my immediate thoughts were Tinder or Grinder depending on your sexual orientation..... :)

Having read the body of your question I would also think Ocean Village. Pay them for a short stay and do a pick up / drop off. Transport from the main university campus to Ocean Village should be simple enough as there is a satellite part of the university based there.

In which case Derby Road!

Kemps Quay would be my best guess but I think it dries or Drivers Wharf opposite, which I *think* doesn't dry.

Failing those, Shamrock Quay, there is also an eatery onsite there.

Many years ago we used to moor on a berth upriver of Itchen Bridge beyond what used to be Vespasian boatyard and that was very definitely tidal. There is Dyer Bros Marina on the other side just downstream of Cobden Bridge but that is also tidal. Agree probably Kemps is as far upriver as the OP could get for all tides access
 
Can’t see any possible reason to choose Ocean Village over Shamrock Quay. Both are all-tide MDL sites and Shamrock is further upriver as requested. There’s also Saxon Wharf next door which is also an MDL site.

Kemps does fully dry on low springs, but you could probably get alongside the outer pontoon with this weekend’s 1.4m. The downriver end is deeper.

I don’t know Drivers or Dyer’s, but given its location I’d expect the latter to be pretty tidal.

Saxon Wharf, they can walk to it from the University.
Any other "pick up", try Derby Road nearby, used to have an interesting reputation.;)
 
Hi.

Depends on your boat draft and air draft for the bridges

Top of the ride you’ll get all the way to woodmill you can pick up off the wall by the road but the wall isn’t very boat friend

In riverside park there is a public pontoon with a public car park behind the working mans club in manor farm road but again you need the tide. You’d have hour and a half each side of the tides pretty much for both of the above

Dyers has no visitors moorings so very unlikely to get in there
Drivers dry berthing by northam bridge is full tide access
Saxon wharf loads of water
Kemps quay loads of water outside pontoon all others dry
Shamrock quay loads of water
Below that no tide issues

I’m on the itchen so know 1st hand.
If you venture under northam bridge don’t be tempted to go near the dumped boat moorings there are ropes all over the place. No Chanel makers after northam bridge
 
Suggest contacting Town Quay marina to ask if they would allow a quick pick up...plus your sons can then get the free bus from the station to Town Quay......especially as students are always pleading poverty.....well my daughter is, haha!!

Yachts hard aground at the downriver end of the outer pontoon (the only place where the mud doesn’t actually break the surface, but it gets pretty close):

Downriver end again, not quite low water this time, but note the white yacht on the river side is firmly aground, as is the pontoon as we can tell by the angle:

So nope, sadly no part of Kemp’s has “loads of water” ;)

We’re on neaps this weekend though ?
The images I would assume were bottom of springs,
this all said we don’t know what the boat is, it’s draft eith below or above the water line

Lovely. That mud looks familiar. As I said earlier we had a berth many years ago upstream of Kemps at a very small marina which is now a block of flats. At the time I had a Turbo 36 and before I took the berth I was extremely dubious about allowing the boat to dry out for obvious reasons but the owner of the marina reassured me that all would be well and so it was. My boat made its own little indentation in the gloop and settled very happily whenever the tide was out. I never had to antifoul her during our period moored there either which was a bonus. The only problem was not being able to use the sea toilet onboard when the tide was out. No problem for me but the SWMBO got quite agitated at times;)
 
I am sure that if you are literally stopping to pick up and later on drop off then any of the Marina's would not charge for this, I even stopped at Cowes Yacht Haven to quickly pop to Tiffins for 2 lunches I said max 15 mins they said no prob no charge

+1 we often pick up from marinas, not the itchen though, and have just done it......never been a problem......

Drivers is accessible at all tide states but gates locked out of hours.
Above that there is a bridge and the water has to be low enough to get under it giving you a depth problem further up. Needs careful planning above drivers. Most of kemps in the other side of the river dries.
