A passage to India

My 19 yr old son begins his gap year shortly, and come winter has a post helping a school in India. Being minded to avoid flying, he'd like to get to India by sea or even rail. Does anyone have any experience of how this might be achieved on a modest budget?

You could also look at travelling by container ship. I just googled 'container ship travel' and strand travel offer Felixstowe to Mumbai( or thereabouts) for around £2600.

and I thought that suggesting the overland route was scary enough....

Seriously, word has it that yots transitting the Red Sea are safer now than ever before as the pirates are now concentrating their efforts away from the Horn.

I believe it would be cheaper to fly(but not so romantic) - my son is thinking of visitng a uni mate in Mumbai and told me the other day it would cost about £400 to fly...
