Experienced first hand this morning, at about 0700, how truly 'orrible the Wallet can be, especially off the Naze. Southerly 4-5 they said, OK I thought for a trip from the Orwell to Brit'l'sea. Oh no it wasn't. For a start, by the time we got near the Naze, it was SSW F5-6, which is an F too far, and rounding the Naze it was 6-7, not nice at all, bloomin' rough and uncomfortable. Nearing Walton Pier I was contemplating scuttling back to SYH for breakfast, when we evidently left the killing zone and it became only grotty so we bashed on.
Arrived at 1000 and promptly went to sleep for 2 hours. Still here, wind still groaning in the rig and raining too. Why oh why do I do this? I want to go home.

we got pooped yesterday, 5"of water in the cockpit, some went passed my shoulder & down stairs .
all dried out now, well the boat is :D

I only dream of getting coshed in the Wallet. Some people don't know when they are well off.
An opportunity to try the new sheeting positions on the storm jib.

We came the other way yesterday, left Heybridge at 10-45, got to Woolverstone at 1700, the Wallet was fairly foul and we were going with the wind and tide.

There were few other yachts about, I could see one other a fair way ahead, which I think carried on towards the Deben?

Off the Naze we saw some barges and one yacht heading South.

The wind was mainly SSW F5, with a max true wind of 25 KTs, which generated a nasty quartering sea which madam really did not appreciate. :(

The only virtue was the passage time was an hour less than our best previous.

We had been contemplating continuing our summer cruise for another week or so until the CG 0710 ISWF in the General Situation bit said. "Further Atlantic lows with associated weather fronts will give unsettled and windy weather for the forseeable future" We looked at each other and said "Let's go home!"

By contrast with yesterday's epic we had a nice quiet potter in the Blackwater today and wound up at Bradwell. But I think we will probably head south tomorrow, early start back to the Medway and a few miles from home. Try again in August, perhaps...

We were the one yacht heading south with the barges yesterday.Yes very noddy and unpleasant but possible with the wind and tide going against us.
At least we thought it was flatter than wind against tide !
Certainly didnt feel like July, more like October.
