A new Head for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency

"Why do large banks recruit CEOs with financial services backgrounds?....not because they want him/her to set the banks core lending rate, but becuase they want him to appreciate the impact of the different lending rates, understand what markets they operate in, or could operate in, who their competition are, and most of all, who the people in the industry are that he can trust and who are those that he/she should be wary of......

This guy may be a great leader, and an advisor of fantastic talent, but he's not going to know whether the first shipping company CEO that walks through his door is playing him a personal or industry agenda......"

You put your finger on it.

The gap between the good, the bad and the ugly in shipping company CEO's is almost infinitely vast, and it extremely difficult, nay impossible, to explain it whilst steeing clear of the laws of libel, since some of the "ugly", who masquerade very effectively as the "good", are guilty of very serious crimes, not excluding manslaughter.

Much though this is a fascinating subject and believe me I can bang on for hours about this, I think we'll have to agree to disagree for the moment and judge him by his results.

Lay off the guy - can't you see where HMG is leading this?

They've appointed a guy with a first class honours degree & track record in blagging money out of people - the only difference here is that they have given him a mandate and powers to force money out of the "industry".

As for him being a yottie - what's the betting his boat is moored on Carshalton Duck Pond?

Peter.

Yup; suffice it to say that my company's plans to use the British flag are now on hold until we see what the fellow gets up to!
