Have you not considered cats instead? They too are cuddly and crap all over the place, but you can leave them for 4 days at a time with just a timer-feeder and a cat-flap for company while you're off sailing. Try that with kids and you'll have the SS knocking on your door.
BTW I wouldn't plump for a name until you know which type it is you're getting. Just don't call it "Penelope of Hamble" or "Tarquin of Beaulieu" if you want to retain your ruftie-tuftie image.
