A neat way to lock a stern locker\'s lid?

My Galion 22 and others like her have a single moulded grp lid to the locker in the cockpit, it is a very handy storage space but hard to secure when away from the boat. It is a kind of square bannana shape with a lip all the way round like a tray, only upside down.

Does anyone have a cunning and neat way to lock the lid, by neat I mean something other than a padlock and hasp at each end.

My old Dufour 2800 had a 6mm rope running from the inside of the boat to the inside of the cockpit locker. It had a hook on the end that clipped into a ring on the locker lid. You could clip on the hook and tension it from inside the boat making a sort of invisible lock. It was a good backup to the standard outside lock as it housed my new Eberspacher among other goodies.

I think your locker is similar to mine. We originally had a hasp and staple which was clumsy and unattractive. I replaced it with a fitting that I originally saw on a Beneteau. It's a spring-loaded ball, drilled for a padlock, on a plate that is attached to the fixed part of the locker. The striker plate is on the lid and has a hole that the drilled ball protrudes through. I'm pretty sure I bought it from Timage but they don't have a website so I cannot find it. I also don't have a photo to illustrate my description. Sorry.

I have completed a boat from a hull and deck and used the system of ropes to jam cleats below for my cockpit lockers.
Enough things in the cockpit to draw blood from without hasps, locks etc. !

How do you gain access to the lockers when on board and sailing ? Do you leave them unsecured, and free to be lifted up ? If so, is there an acceptable risk to this ?

How about a couple of camlocks. Low profile, all brass, fairly unobtrusive.

You make a good point. Only one hatch is cleated inside the cabin - quite close to companionway. Other two cleat inside first locker. Yes there is a tendancy to leave them open, which is not a good idea. (Mind you, I have worse tendancies !!)

Camlocks require a key - make a nice hole in your skin if you leave them in, and can't be found if you take them out.

As I read it, the need was for a means of locking the lid "when away from the boat".

I have an aft cabin, and I have a bar about 1/4 inch dia with a 'T' handle which when pushed in goes through a hasp under the locker lid and secretly seals it. A simple pull on the handle allows the locker to be opened from on deck.

I opted for the rope running from the inside surface of the hatch cover cleated in the cabin by the companionway easy to secure when in rough seas or when leaving the boat. before i installed this system my locker was unlocked permanently and lifted clear of the locker to gain access, a situation that i personally was not comfortable with considering the cavernous locker and relatively low freeboard of my craft worried that i may completely lose the lid in a heavy sea derpite the external fastenings /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
