a narrowboat question

I have little knowledge of such beasts but a freind is considering buying one and has asked my advise.

The one he is looking at has been overplated on the sides and he wants to know how long it should be expected to last? (length of a piece of string springs to mind)

anyone on here have knowledge or advice I can pass on?

Can a surveyor tell the condition of the structure hidden behind the plating?

Sank due to "ingress of water", did the insurers cough-up

Then ask any questions that might arise.

Overplating is a basic inexpensive method to prolong the life of a steel hull.Pretty sure for commercial craft it is no longer allowed and wasted hull section must be removed and flush welded to get insured.

With so many to choose from, I'm not sure I'd start with one that had had repairs like that

Personally I think it is a bodge and wouldn't touch with a barge pole! but its individual choice and it seems it can be insured with a survey.

iirc there's a 2004 57' narrow boat for sale in Abingdon Marina,

It's been a livaboard since it was new and needs a bit of work on the inside

You are correct! There are so many good boats for sale, there is no need to buy one that may have a big issue.

How much can your friend spend, and how long does it need to be?

This one suits his budget and he knows the seller, plus he likes this one and it has a new engine.

We have all fallen for the wrong boat/woman so I understand!

Get a survey and get the thickness of the hull checked and see how the work has been done. I had one a while ago that and essentially become it's own anode as was down to 2mm!!
