I've just be quoted £160 for lifting my boat out for a couple of hours so I can check my rudder and skeg.
£160 struck me as being a little steep for a 23 footer so I was wondering whether there is a suitable hard to dry out on, in the Orwell area.
I guess there's Pin Mill but I'm unsure of who I need to ask and I didn't see any piles.
My Pandora is a lifting keel but I'd still need to lay up to something as I've yet to make any stubby legs.

Being new to the area I'm yet to identify some good places and given my first post about the Bar at Felixstowe ferry I'm slightly nervous of the replies I might get. :p

Not as cheap as a drying post but last year I had a rattle under the boat and thought my shaft anode had come loose. I booked a summer scrub at Shotley and asked for time to change the anode. I was in the slings for well over an hour and it cost £130 (31footer) and that included a free night in the marina.:)

In the end it was bearings in the rope cutter. They also had the parts and someone to drill out the rounded SS bolts and then showed me how it came apart, helped me clean it and re-assembled it for me. £18 + VAT for the service kit and £36 for an hours labour. Top helpful people.

There is a acrubbing post at Suffolk Yacht Harbour, Levington.

Visitors - £23.50 per tide.

Details here:

Someone will be along shortly to describe the process in more detail I'm sure.

Both Orwell and Royal Harwich Yacht Clubs also having scrubbing piles but I don't know their availability if you are not a member.

The scrubbing grid at Suffolk Yacht Harbour consists of a couple of 'pens'. You motor in at high water and tie up to a platform. Water and electricity on the spot and the chandlers closeby for all the bits and bobs you might need.

They also do lift and hold in the slings. This summer I asked if they would lift BR and put her in a cradle for a weekend for me and they said they would for the same price as lift and hold. In the end I sorted the problem on the water, so didn't take it up. Can't remember how much they wanted, but nowhere near as cheap as the scrubbing post.

I know this isn't helpful, but you can lay alongside the wall at Rochford over the weekend for a tenner. There is water and electricity there, and you are on concrete with a 3 inch covering of gloop.

I also found Fambridge to be £115 mid season special and Burnham Yacht Harbour £110 for the same

My own yard at Bridgemarsh wanted £200.

I paid 45 Euros for a lift, jet wash and hold for a couple of hours whilst the boat was surveyed.

Not very convenient for you though, it was at Koudum, East of the Ijsselmere. ;)

So given that I hate paying anyone any money that I could be putting towards important stuff like sails, batteries, solar panels, various fittings etc, I think I'll investigate Pin Mill a bit further and failing that a quick blast to Koudum:D

I used to sail in the Chichester area and we were lucky with a number of suitable beaches in the area or even a little trip over to Bembridge.

For Pin Mill, have a word with Gus at Kings boatyard. http://www.kingsboatyard.co.uk/

For anyone interested, the Summer special at Shotley is about £17.50 per metre. That's lift out and pressure wash, chock up on the hard for a week (if you need a week) and lift back in. Vat is included and electricity and water are available. Electricity is charged for, but very reasonable, i think we used something like 50p worth over a weekend. Not 100% certain if those rates are only available to berth holders.

Scrubbing post on the Deben

There are posts at Felixstowe Ferry, they are on shingle. You would need to ask the Ferry Boatyard on 01394 282173. And also posts at Waldringfield SC with a concrete base, from which it is possible to fall off judging by the boat we saw there on Saturday. Photo is not very sharp as we were trying to avoid masses of SC dinghies about to start racing at the time.

That is a very scary picture !

Have never known that kind of thing to happen.

Looking again it is obviously a much bigger boat.

I would guess that he never managed to get upright to the posts.

Probably got close with not enough water and could not get off again.

Feel better now.

I am having the lift out jet wash and put back in at Levington.I have arranged it so that it is in the slings while the yard gang are having lunch to give me time to grease my Kiwi prop and check anodes.About £90 from memory. They do this summer deal until the end of September.

I had the summer lift and scrub earlier this year. Cost me £70. I asked them if they would check the anode and replace if necessary, also if they would give the prop a bit of a scrape while they were at it. The only extra I paid was the price of the anode.

Being fin keel I find the scrubbing post thing a bit scary and you have to give up a whole day for the exercise and get wet and muddy into the bargain. So I think the lift and scrub at £70 is a bit of a bargain. But horses for courses.

As advised, do talk to Gus at Pin Mill, but basically its a public hard and a very nice one as well after all the work that has been done. There are three new pairs of posts with a good shingle underlay and it is FREE to use them. The posts are steel piles so you would need to make sure you have a fender board of about 10 feet in length to avoid damaging gelcoat.

As things stand there is no management of this facility yet so don't pay anyone money!
