A Little Note On Red Diesel

I forgot to say in my earlier post that top marks should go to MDL for the very clear and excellent signage on the fuel berth. The cost of both petrol and 60/40 disel was displayed in very large numbers that could be easily seen from the opposite side of the river.

I wish all marine fuel berths did this.

They would if it was an attractive price. Why publicise the fact that you are a Robin Barsteward? Garages only do it because Govt legislation forces them.
 
I thought that red had tax on it, so would it only be the marin that lost out if we used red from a garage!

I would have thought that HMGov would have been OK with us using normal red.

A number of garages I know, that sell red, won't serve you if you tell them it is for a boat - I believe they are obliged to ask.
Furthermore, a few of them have stopped selling it at all.
Both these situations are, they say, because of the complication regarding the different tax levels that have to be charged for "propulsion" and "non propulsion" - typically the latter is for heating/battery charging.
It's a lousy ruling by the EU, the full effect of which HMCR have tried to reduce, by creating this 2 level tax system. It could have been a lot worse, cost wise.

Well it's a good job I only fill up at marinas then ;)

Actually, if you try to look at it dispassionately, it's a perfectly reasonable ruling by the EU, made lousy by the unmitigated greed of UK governments past and present who have got used to bleeding the motorist dry by charging excessive taxes on road fuel.
The 60:40 split is a compromise, designed primarily to stop the UK losing revenue from boats being taken abroad and to minimise the risk that HMRC might find itself facing some seriously expensive, precedent-setting legal actions.
