a hat that does not make me look like a twassockt

I have gone for wide brim, Baseball caps don't cover the ears.

My father was always careful to keep out of the sun but he had several bits of of the exposed parts of his face and neck sliced off, so don't forget the sun block even if you wear a big hat.

How about a nice, functional Tin Foil Hat. Does far more than just keep the sun off!

Pedant Warning - I am British and its tin foil, irrespective of the actual material that the stuff is made from. So shove it up the place that the sun doesn't shine, sideways.

You need something to protect your ears as well as the top of your head and I can think of nothing more suited to the purpose than one of these:

The Tilley one comes with a string which can be used as a chinstrap if you wish, or it can go round the back of your head below where it bulges out (assuming you're not a stereotype German) and be tightened up. Rigged like that, mine has withstood 50knot winds on the open bridge of a ship coming in through the Straits of Gibraltar.

and when it wears out you just to have a word with the fine people at Tilley and they send you a new one - free of charge! No connection - just impressed with a great hat and great service - not something you find that often these days

my father in law has just had his melanoma move into his lymph system - which is not a good thing

it is time to grasp the nettle and look for some summerish headwear in an attempt to stop the same thing happening to me

being a jowly man means that most hats make me look even uglier and even more of a pear-headed pratt than I do without

I am pathologically averse to baseball caps

so does anyone have any suggestions - along with snaps - of a suitable titfa costing less than £10 because I the life expectancy will be low

I will lose it overboard fairly frequently

Sorry but whilst sailing there is nothing better than a Musto or similar ( they have a lanyard that clips onto the collar oif your jacket and prevents loss overboard) baseball cap in summer. Fleece hats in winter.

Dylan, whatever you wear, you really cannot look....

Get a nice Harris tweed flat cap, can't go wrong with them.

...more of a P£$t than we lot in these pics which plumb the depths of nautical all season headwear fashion:D:D:D:D:D:D

Remember, Varnished bowlers were all the rage for skippers in Thames trading barge days.
Mind you, so was a wad of cardboard/newspaper down the front of yer guernsey under yer donkey jacket, to try and keep the winter E and NE Arctic winds out in the bitter winters of my yoof.

I reckon the Breton cap well weathered does quite well for 9 months of the year, and it's handy for mopping up oil and coffee, etc spills, which add to the waterproofing, and as a nonslip, non magnetic parts container when dismantling an outboard carb or other fiddly mechanism.

For the other 3 month of 'summer' the trick is to buy something cheap and ugly with a wide brim at the end of every summer in the sales, and it will never go over the side!

Ex military kit is well made, and long lasting and cheap! try;

Dylan,
how about one of these, they seem to be becoming more popular...

On a not quite so jockular front, I keep a 'keffiyah' or 'shemagh' on the boat for when it's really sunny/really wet/really cold (just the thing for this summer.... part from the hot of course). Use it to mop up drips down the neck of waterproofs when wet, insulates the head when cold and keeps the sun off when sunny. Might look a bit odd and I tend not to put it on until after I've passed the MOD police in Portsmouth but a useful, multipurpose bit of kit.

Also works well when skiing, mountain biking etc.

yep, wear a hat at all times in the warm sunny weather, and in bright clear sky weather.

I've a few nasties removed from Ears and Head, no prpoblem, but been strongly advised to wear a hat at all times when outside, as the skin on top of head is 'weathered' and will not heal up properly, applying suitable skin rejuvinator? cream.

Many many years of damage caused by cycling, swimming, sailing, boating etc etc without head protection.

Can't really imagine how I would wear it out.

I have lost a couple; they replace lost ones at half price. When they send the replacement they carefully omit the card enabling you to replace that one at half price though :)

My main regret at losing it has been that I need to start building up the patina of use from scratch again. The old one had a very faint whiff of diesel (only noticeable if you stuck your nose in it) from a near-sinking, some minor tar stains from maintaining the rig of a square-rigger, and was stiffened with ingrained salt. The current one is pristine new-boy beige and rather limp, and has French writing on the inside as well.
