my father in law has just had his melanoma move into his lymph system - which is not a good thing

it is time to grasp the nettle and look for some summerish headwear in an attempt to stop the same thing happening to me

being a jowly man means that most hats make me look even uglier and even more of a pear-headed pratt than I do without

I am pathologically averse to baseball caps

so does anyone have any suggestions - along with snaps - of a suitable titfa costing less than £10 because I the life expectancy will be low

I will lose it overboard fairly frequently

Is this a wide-brim look you are after? You seem to have folicle growth to protect the cranial apex.
I find that hats generally make one look a twat but don't let that stop me.

I think you need something traditional and forget the normal ideas. If it was good enough for Nelson.......

I would ordinarily suggest a Tilley, but your budget is too lean.:)

Me too.

There are cheaper hats around of a similar style, though a £10 version will necessarily be more lightweight and floppy and may tend towards the pensioner-going-to-the-beach look.

Have a look in M&S. My partner being Australian and therefore melanoma obsessed ignored my protests about "Not being the hat type" and that "hats don't fit me" and bought me one of these in Plymouth a few weeks ago (different stuff availble, but this fitted me best and looked least offensive). The XL will fit my 7 5/8" head pretty well. Obviously we then had another 3 weeks with no need to wear it so I'm blaming her for the holiday wash-out.

best yet

+1 :o but I had to face this issue when skin dammage meant I had to hide form the sun for a couple of years.

I tried all sorts ended up with 3 hats one for every occasion :)

1) Leather bush hat winter keeps head warm and rain out as well.
2) Digger hat wide brimmed with wire round edge, (and poppers on sides) summer time kept sun of well..
3) Canvas "Drizza Bone Sloutch hat" although I am sure I did not pay that! Very handy keeps rain out sun off and can be stuffed into your pocket...

When ever you see a hat that you like try it on one, might not look tw*t bad on you.

Also check sizing I like mine to just fall off when I bend low down, if not I find they tend to be to tight...

I agree

A broad brimmed hat such as the Tilley

At least they look good on my friends Nick and Heather

Or perhaps traditional Breton cap

or a more yachty style cap:

How do people keep these things on in any breeze without a chinstrap ?

The Tilley one comes with a string which can be used as a chinstrap if you wish, or it can go round the back of your head below where it bulges out (assuming you're not a stereotype German) and be tightened up. Rigged like that, mine has withstood 50knot winds on the open bridge of a ship coming in through the Straits of Gibraltar.

Hats like that may look jaunty on crumpet ( in fact it looks silly even on her ), but any normal person strolling around wearing that would deserve being put in the stocks outside a sailing club...
