I was recently told that to continue driving the displacement power boat I have been using regularly without incident for the last 5 years I must now have a Powerboat level 2 certificate. Today I went for the test but instead of using our clumsy landing craft they let me play with a quick rib. Instead of plodding around at 4 knots it was 25. I'm sure it gets boring after a while but for the odd day out it was great fun.

p.s. yes, I passed.

Do you mind me asking, who told you the test was required, and why.

No disrespect, but I've yet to hear of anyone failing a PB2, plus, it's the servant that takes the money, not the master;)

Or perhaps I should say that it's more likely the high standard of RYA approved instructors, not the 300+ that it costs

Our boat is operated on South West Lakes Trust property so they make the rules.

I only did the test. Been driving boats under sail and power for 55 years (though most of my planing has been under sail, not power, hence the fun aspect). Nothing taxing, and anyone who has spent years messing about on the water should have no problems.
