A good radar practice CD thinghy?

Keen to learn more about radar and would like a recommendation for a CD to play with on my computer .

If I can get one before Christmas it would be helpful so any suggestions where to buy one around Southampton or Thames area would be appreciated.

I think its used at Bisham, but at £60 its not cheap. You could call Bisham and check whats used.

You could get it as a Christmas present but per your other post thats not allowable!

Nick. Is it not easier just to play around with the real radar. you've got. I presume you have one?? Practice on clear days. Or when anchored. Even when tied up. But not in a marina. To confusing. Turn the rain, sea, gain knobs to nothing then set range, then turn gain up till screen gets just a bit green speckley, but not to much. Theres nowt much else to know about. Look out the window. If what you see is whats on the screen youve cracked it. If not panic.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Stick one of them zoomy round line thingies on it. If it follows the line your going to bash it. Just like on a chart if degrees stay constant.

How you think I've managed to cover Ireland Scotland, Wales England and France without hitting owt yet. Mind I did once follow a trawler on the screen till I had to put the brakes on or hit it. Gulp!!

Very good thing to practice with radar on good days. Very usefull for checking ships positions when crossing channel. Or finding how far from headlands etc. Especialy as you might go all year without needing it in anger. Then forget how to use it, or get rusty and frustrated. Not good in the fog!!

Hmm! the follow the expert tactic. The first solo night trip I did from Cowes to Hamble, I followed the ferry <sigh> but I was a novice then. Did put a cramp on my style, as I had to slow right down. Just as well I was following a Red Jet, not the steam thingie

No. Not following expert. Both a bit numb. I decided he was the give way vessel. He was not steering. But all stood on the back fishing. Cant understand why I did not turn round and go the other way. Watched him on screen till about ten ft off. Then saw him through the window. Mind it would have taught him a lesson if I'd rammed him!!

Call Robert Avis 07850 296 036 who runs an outstanding one day radar course using a Navy simulator at HMS something or other.

I thought I knew how to use radar until I went on this course. Stunning. Worth every penny and more.

Best Christmas pressy going. Better than any CD.
